Butler Co. Chapter DAR Honors Givens Brothers

Brothers Ronald and Stevie Givens will be presented the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Community Service Award at a ceremony Thursday, May 7, at 5:30 p.m. at the Eva Hawes Building at Morgantown City Park, located on Helm Lane. The event is open to the public.

The Butler County Chapter NSDAR nominated the brothers in recognition of their combined 100-plus years of service to Butler County as members of the Morgantown Volunteer Fire Department. The ceremony is taking place during International Firefighters Week.

Ronald joined the fire department in 1968. Shortly after beginning as a firefighter, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving three years including deployment to Vietnam. Ronald never actually left the MVFD during that time as he would help out at the station and make runs when on leave back in the county. Stevie began his service with the fire department in 1975 shortly after high school and has served continuously through today.

Over the years, the brothers have responded to hundreds of fires along with helping during floods, storms and other disaster situations. Other volunteer work has included participating in community parades, Firefighter Olympics and roadblocks to raise funds for local organizations.

The event will begin with a reception and refreshments at 5:30 p.m. followed by the ceremony at 6 p.m. Speakers will include Butler County Judge-Executive Tim Flener and Morgantown Mayor Billy Phelps. The award will be presented by Butler County NSDAR President Lynda O’Driscoll.
