Butler Co. 26 Edmonson Co. 21

The regular season came to an end at BCHS football field, playing  rival Edmonson Co. Wildcats. Add Senior Night and a fourth quarter come from behind Bears victory was witnessed by those who braved the 40 degree temps, rain and wind throughout the entire ballgame.

Edmonson Co. and Butler Co. also had to deal with field conditions more than ideal; as rain through most of the night made the middle of the field slippery. Edmonson Co.’s  game plan was run the football, and a plan which saw the Wildcats eat up the clock dominating the time of possession controlling the ball for 31 of the 48 minute ballgame. But that would be a stat that would be misleading at games end.

A scoreless first quarter by both teams as defense forced punt after punt. The second quarter of play Butler Co. would put up the first score of the night as senior QB Elijah Flener found an open Matt Moore who then outran the Wildcat defenders for a 45 yard touchdown pass reception. The extra point kick was good by Corey Johnson, score 7-0 Bears with 7:37 to play in the first half.

Edmonson Co. on the next possession took no time and on second and nine a 52 yard run for the touchdown, the kick was good, score tied 7-7 with 6:48 left in the half. The following kickoff was fumbled deep in Bears territory and recovered by the Wildcats at the fifteen yard line. On the very next play running back Tobias up the middle for a Wildcat touchdown, the kick was good. Wildcats led 14-7 with 6:33 left in the half. The Bears next possession on a third and five saw the Wildcats capitalize with an interception. The Wildcats drove the ball ninety-one yards in ten plays as Lee scored his second touchdown of the night on a 7 yard touchdown run. The kick again good, Edmonson Co. led now 21-7 with 1:55 remaining in the first half of play. The Bears did have one more possession but at the break Bears trailed 21-7.

Edmonson Co. at the half had already amassed 200 yards rushing, and it appeared that with a 14 point lead and the weather not favoring a night to be passing the football; the Bears Sr.  Night was one half away from disappointing. But that is why you play two halves of football, four quarters. The Bears made adjustments defensively to shut down the Wildcats run game and began chipping away and began to mount a comeback.

Late in the third quarter the Bears put together a twelve play drive capped of by Flener on the quarterback keeper taking it in for the touchdown from nine yards out; the kick was good  score read 21-14 with 0:40 seconds left in the third quarter of play. The Bears defense on the very next possession forced a Wildcat fumble. The Bears deep in Wildcat territory wasted no time and in three play drive; wide out Zeke Woodcock hauled in a twenty-six yard touchdown pass; the kick was no good this time; but now the Bears with all the momentum trailed only 21-20 with 11:19 left to play.

Edmonson Co. offense was completely shut down in the second half of play; after rushing for 200 yards in the first half; the Wildcats in the second half of play would only be allowed 35 rushing yards on 26 carries; and held to a total offense in the second half of only 44 yds. With the Wildcat offense fading away and time running out; on a fourth and fifteen for the Wildcats in punt formation the snap sailed over the punters head the Bears defense made the tackle deep in Bear territory on the 28 yard line. On second and ten, again the combination of Flener to Woodcock came up big as Woodcock made the catch; first and goal at the five.

On first and goal from the five; RB Cody White took the go ahead touchdown run in; Bears now lead 26-21 with only 3:46 remaining. The two point conversion failed. The Wildcats would take possession but would only reach midfield and the clock expired. The Bears win a great come from behind victory on Senior Night.
