Board of Education: BCHS principal vacancy to be filled by end of school year, MES Archery trip debated

The Butler County Board of Education met in regular session Thursday evening at Morgantown Elementary School.

The Butler County Board of Education met in regular session Thursday evening at Morgantown Elementary School.

Superintendent Scott Howard added two items to the meeting following the meeting’s call to order: an approval of Morgantown Elementary’s Archery Team’s trip to Nationals in Louisville, Ky. (where they will compete May 13 at 1 p.m.) and a potential trip the 2016 NASP World Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The MES Archery’s trip to Nationals was approved, but the latter item failed to pass at Thursday’s meeting due to the lack of a second.  Board member Debbie Hammers made a motion to approve the trip to South Carolina. Board member Amy Hood  abstained due to the fact her son is a member of the archery team. Board members Ryan Daugherty nor Delbert Johnson provided a second.  Member Charles Price wasn’t present at the meeting.

The dissenting vote sparked a contentious response from MES Archery coaches and parents. The board decided to gather more information about the trip to South Carolina and will plan a special called meeting about the matter within the week, Howard said.

The MES archery team was recognized for it’s successful inaugural season in the Morgantown Elementary gymnasium prior to Howard’s superintendent report.

The archery team captured 151 individuals awards over the course of the season, capturing third place at regional competition (out of 21 other elementary teams) and finished 28th overall in state competition.

“I am so proud of you all and am proud to be able to recognize these great accomplishments you’ve made this season,” Howard said.

Morgantown Elementary School student Layton Phelps was recognized for being the District Spelling Bee Winner.

The following MES students were recognized for placing in the top three of the Art Conservation Contest:

First place: Lydia Brown

Second place: Alex Bratcher

Third place: Briar Griffin

Treasurer Eric Elms gave the month report.

Total Receipts: $1,828,978.21

Howard said there will be a council training from 3 until 6 p.m. Thursday for the current principal vacancy at Butler County High School. Howard said the goal is to have the vacancy filled by the end of the current school year.
