Board to consider limiting background checks; Moore honored at his last meeting

Supt. Howard and Greg Moore

The Butler County Board of Education held their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday night. In the Superintendent’s report, Scott Howard recognized the Campbellsville Excellence in Teaching Award recipients, Lisa Rhoades, Penny Wallace, and Kassie Decker.  Principals Jeff Jennings and Pat O’Driscoll both attended the ceremony with the teachers at Campbellsville University in May.

Superintendent Howard said, “We have been doing this for several years and we really appreciate the opportunity. It’s a great way for our teachers to be recognized in a formal setting.”

Howard also bragged on the BCHS Band for their opportunity to attend the Hot Rods game and play the National Anthem with Band Director Jason Ausbrooks throwing out the first pitch.

Howard explained to the board that due to financial hardships, the school district is going to have to consider limiting the number of background checks completed for volunteers.  The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) is going to do background checks for school districts at a discounted price, but every time one is done it costs the school district ten dollars.

Howard told the board, “We talked to Mrs. Deye this week and she told us she did 1,300 background checks this last year for MES.” Howard also said, “On the other side of the coin you’ve got great parents who want to volunteer and you’re going to ask them to pay $10, it’s a dilemma.”

Howard said that the commissioner has had two meetings with AOC, and there is a possibility of a fee waiver for anyone who meets certain qualifications.

The superintendent’s evaluation is coming up on June 30. Howard told the board that he had copies of the evaluation instrument to give each of them, and they will be scheduling an open, special called meeting.

Pat O’Driscoll spoke of the success of this year’s summer school.

O’Driscoll told the board ‘We extended it three extra days, we serviced over 100 students, and the number of credits made up was 4.25. We don’t have good luck after school during the regular school year, but summer school, when the parents drop them off, they know they are there so it was very successful this year.”

Pam Pendley gave a report of activities taking place at Bear’s Den this summer.  They are in the middle of their 3rd week with one week remaining. They have 69 kids enrolled this year ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade. Ten of the area youth are serving as volunteers to the program.  They are focusing on health, physical education, nutrition and literacy. Laura Crafton has been doing a literacy project with the kids and reading a book called Turtle in Paradise. They read the book together and then do activities inspired by the book in their classes. A number of physical activities are being incorporated including tennis, volleyball, soccer, track and field, jump rope and gymnastics.

Pendley told the board, “We are using the Pep Grant, we are collaborating with Life Skills, Family Resource and Youth Services Center, and the school district.”

They have taken five field trips with three remaining and still have four trips to the city pool.

Dionne Merritt addressed the board for permission for a variety of fundraisers to be held for Morgantown Elementary School’s PTO.  Merritt told the board that the PTO had new officers, Tammy Suggs president, Leanne Hudnall vice-president, and Amy Hooten Treasurer/Secretary. She mentioned that they would all be working as a team and wanted to get a jump start on fundraising for the upcoming year.  Some of the fundraisers included a fall festival/chili supper, a Christmas Bazaar, lemonade at the Catfish Festival parade, and baked goods on election night.  Howard and the board approved her request.

Howard asked the board to look at the FY 13 School Waste disposal bids. The current bid is with B & J Sanitation, but Kenway Disposal had provided a bid. The difference between the two is about $120. After talking to Mr. Reed, Howard told the board that his only concern was whether or not it was worth having someone to come in and change out all the receptacles. Greg Moore questioned the service of the current provider and Howard told him there haven’t been any issues to his knowledge.

Jody Allen, of Kenway Disposal, explained his bid to the board.  Allen told the board, “We are more than capable of doing the business. We have over 300 containers out now. Two trucks and brand new containers, we don’t have any old ones, we buy them brand new as we sell them. In the grand scheme of things $120 is not a whole lot of money. It may take a little time to transition, but we are in that business and we’ve got the equipment to do it.”

Later in the meeting, the board approved Kenway Disposal’s bid.

The board recognized member Greg Moore as this was his last meeting as an active member. Howard presented him with a plaque in honor of his service.  Moore is resigning from the board in order to pursue a career in education.

Howard also announced re-election is coming up for board members Debbie Hammers, Karen Evans, and a vacancy for Moore’s position. Intents to run must be filed by August 14th with the election taking place in November.

The board approved the following:
•    FY 13 and FY 14 Bond of Depository for Public Schools
