Blue White Game, Flag Football, Food, and Music

The season on the calendar is Spring, but it was football season last Friday night at Butler County High School. Over a hundred fans, parents, and boosters gathered at the BCHS football field for the 2014 Blue/White Spring scrimmage.

The Bears had just finished two weeks of spring drills, and the players and staff used Friday night to showcase what fans will see in August when the Friday night lights go on for real. The teams were divided into the offensive and defensive u it's, and played for 60-minutes. The offense received points for scoring touchdowns, and the defense was awarded points for getting stops.

Fans were treated to some exciting plays, with plenty of big hits to go around. The offense was able to move the ball well in the first few minutes of the game, with quarterback Rex Henderson, and running back John Peyton providing the offensive punch. However the defense responded and gave the offense some stiff competition over the course of the game.

After the game Head Coach Ryan Emmick was pleased with the exhibition.

"That was good. We have work to do, but we had good numbers this spring and the team has come a long way," said Emmick.

The coach was also pleased with his young quarterback, Rex Henderson.

"Rex looked good tonight, but he will look completely different this fall," said Emmick. "We are going to work on his delivery and mechanics, and he will be sharp by opening night."

After the exhibition the fun wasn't over. The fans, fueled by food served by Butler County Cancer Assistance, stayed for the second game of the night. That game featured the staffs of North Butler Elementary and Morgantown Elementary versus the staffs of BCMS and BCHS.

Before the game more than a few spectators shared worries that some of the 'aging' staff members might not be up for the game. Superintendent Scott Howard joked before the game that he wasn't playing because he was afraid he would need to fill in for some of his teachers and administrators next week.

Injury worries were unfounded, but the crowd did see an exciting game. Defense was not much in evidence as touchdowns came early and often. Teams traded several scores, and overtime was eventually needed to crown NBES\MES the winners. For their conquest the winners were presented with trophies donated by All Star Trophies.

With the games complete the night was far from over. Country music star and America's Got Talent contestant Marty Brown was on hand to play for the fans.

Brown, in his signature white cowboy hat and a BCHS football jersey, played a set and gave his comments on the scrimmage.

"That team looked pretty good out there," said Brown, "I think there's going to be a lot of winning on this hill in the fall."

Brown played several of his original songs, but the crowd responded most when he played his song "Champions." "I think you will like this song, and from the way this team looks there just might be some champions in Butler County this fall," said Brown.
