Big Hearts Little Hats

For the second year the Butler County Knitters and Crocheters group has given little red hats to the Medical Center for the new babies. This was inspired by the Big Hearts Little Hats program started in 2014 by the American Heart Association. Last year we donated 144 hats at the beginning of the month and were dismayed to find out they barely lasted to Valentine’s Day. We had greatly underestimated the number of babies born daily at the Medical Center. This year we sent 40 hats on the 7th of February and 70 on the 14th. Our group meets on Mondays at the Butler County Library in Morgantown, so it is easy enough for someone to drop off the hats on Tuesday.

According to the Big Hearts Little Hats website:  “Volunteers from around the country are joining the American Heart Association, in connection with The Children's Heart Foundation, to celebrate American Heart Month by knitting and crocheting red hats for babies born in February at participating hospitals.   Supporters are knitting and crocheting red hats that will be given to thousands of babies during American Heart Month, along with information about living a heart healthy life. Together, we are working to raise awareness, provide resources and inspire moms to take their family’s heart health to heart while also raising awareness about Congenital Heart Defects.”

The knitters and Crocheters are Sibyl Shelton, Christine Bratcher, Jonell Johnson, Linda Pendley, Kathy Vernon, Brenda Jenkins, Beverly Hayes, Danielle Bratcher, Karen Childress, Connie J Embry, Alice Cox and someone who anonymously dropped off hats at the library.

The group welcomes help from anyone who would like to make baby hats. Or just drop by the Butler County Library any Monday, 11 am – 12:30 pm to see what we are doing, and join us.
