Big Bend RD
The Big Bend Rural Development met on Thursday, August 1, 2024. A wonderful potluck meal was provided by everyone in attendance.
After a few brief announcements, the program was presented by member Garry Plamp. Mr. Plamp spoke on Timber and Woodlands. He discussed assistance that can be provided by the Forestry Department and the many resources available from the University of Kentucky.
Mr. Plamp discussed the impact that the climate has on the woodlands and how you can get your timber evaluated. White Oak is currently what the Forestry Department is wanting people to plant because the bourbon industry greatly uses this type of wood. It does take 30 to 40 years for a white oak tree to reach its maturity. He also shared that the Forestry Department is asking individuals to plant chestnut trees.
Finally, Mr. Plamp discussed how Carbon Credits work in the industry and how they will evaluate your timber and give you carbon credits for it. Big companies will buy your carbon credit to offset pollution.
The next meeting of the Big Bend Rural Development will be Thursday, September 5th at 6:30 pm. Bob Annis will be frying fish and Jessica Annis will be sharing her recent photos of her trip to Europe. Everyone is welcome.
