Beech Tree News presents "Bears Spotlight" Garrett Phelps

Garrett is the 6' Varsity quarterback for the BCHS Bears football team. He is a senior at BCHS and he is the son of Bryan and Rachel Phelps of Morgantown.

Garrett has been playing football since the second grade and led his BCMS team to a GRVC Championship and the state tournament in 7th grade. He has been the starting quarterback for the Varsity Bears since his sophomore year. That year, the Bears went 8-2 in regular season play. Garrett was able to play alongside his brother, Layton, that season.

Garrett also plays Varsity baseball for BCHS as a pitcher and center fielder. He has played baseball since he was three years old and was chosen for the District All-Tournament team in 2024.

Garrett comes from a long line of Butler County athletes. His great grandfather, JC Phelps, played basketball for the Bears from 1950-1953, and his grandfather Kevin Phelps started Varsity football and basketball from 1970-1974. In 1974, the Bears were the only undefeated high school team in the state of Kentucky in regular season play.  Bryan, Garrett's dad, played basketball, football, and baseball for the Bears from 1994-1997, and went on to play baseball for Lindsey Wilson College. His brother, Layton, played baseball and football for BCHS from 2020-2023.

Garrett currently has completed 1,001 passing yards and 573 rushing yards for the Bears this season. According to Max Preps, Garrett is second in the state in total yards, only behind Cam O’Hara of Cooper, and edging past Brady Atwell of Owensboro Catholic.

In his spare time, Garrett enjoys hunting and fishing, and has been on the BCHS Bass Fishing Team for two years. He enjoys spending time with his friends and is an active member of Belmont Church. Garrett works for D&D Post Frame Buildings, and plans to attend college after high school to pursue a degree in construction management.

Congratulations on all your athletic achievements, Garret!
