Bears top Panthers, advance to region semifinals

OWENSBORO — Butler County pulled away to defeat Daviess County 79-69 in the quarterfinals of the 3rd Region Boys' Basketball Tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Thursday, March 7.

After notching the win, Butler County advanced to the semifinals of the 3rd Region Boys' Basketball Tournament. 

The Bears and Panthers met for the first time in the 2023-24 boys' high school basketball season. 

Butler County edged Daviess County 19-17 in the opening quarter.

But Daviess County heated up offensively in the second period and managed to lead 40-34 at halftime.

Moving back out in front after the break, Butler County led 56-52 at the end of the third quarter. 

Junior guard Ty Price poured in a game-high 38 points to lead Butler County to the win. 

Along with Price reaching double figures for Butler County, another junior guard, Briar Griffin, netted 15 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for Butler County, junior forward Lawson Rice posted nine points. 

Aiding Butler County in its win, Trever Deweese and Clayton Deweese added six points apiece while Justin Castlen contributed five points.  

Butler County (21-8) will meet Ohio County (19-12) in the semifinals of the 3rd Region Tournament Boys' Basketball Tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 9.
