Bears top Green 66-58; Lady Bears fall to AC-S

MORGANTOWN — Remaining in the win column, Butler County topped visiting Green County 66-58 on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The Bears controlled the fourth quarter to win the non-district boys' high school basketball game. 

Butler County managed to edge Green County 12-10 in the opening quarter.

But productive Green County battled back to lead 30-28 at halftime.

Green County clung to a 46-45 lead at the end of the third quarter, but Butler County wouldn't be denied the win.

Saving its best for last, Butler County thrived throughout the final period to claim the victory.

Ty Price scored a game-high 38 points to lead Butler County to the win. 

Accompanying Price in double figures for the Bears, Lawson Rice netted 22 points.

Rounding out Butler County's individual scoring, Trever Deweese, Luke Laughing and Carson Miller chipped in two points apiece. 

Butler County is scheduled to visit Edmonson County for a 12th District boys' basketball game on Friday, Jan. 20. Tip-off for the Butler County-Edmonson County boys' basketball matchup is set for 7:30 p.m. in Brownsville.

Lady Bears drop game to Allen County-Scottsville

MORGANTOWN — Butler County came up short as visiting Allen County-Scottsville prevailed 54-52 in a girls' high school basketball game on Monday, Jan. 16. 

Allen County-Scottsville shot 44.7 percent (21-of-47) from the field in its winning effort. The Lady Patriots shot 33.3 percent (three-of-nine) from three-point range.

Allen County-Scottsville shot 81.8 percent (nine-of-11) from the free throw line. 

Jayleigh Steenbergen poured in a game-high 29 points to lead Allen County-Scottsville to the win.

Accompanying Steenbergen in double figures for Allen County-Scottsville, Avery Morris scored 15 points.

Aiding Allen County-Scottsville offensively, Jaylee Covington netted eight points for the Lady Patriots.

Rounding out Allen County-Scottsville's scoring, Clara Berry chipped in two points.


Butler County shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) from the field in the girls' high school basketball game. The Lady Bears connected on two of 10 three-point field goal attempts.

Butler County shot 50 percent (six-of-12) from the free throw line. 

Jenna Phelps scored a team-best 16 points to lead the Lady Bears. Accompanying Phelps in double figures for Butler County, Ava Wilson scored 12 points and Taylor Leach netted 10 points.

Finishing near double figures for Butler County, Ann Marie Skaggs tossed in eight points.

Chipping in offensively for Butler County, Parker Willoughby added four points and Kennedy Rice contributed two points. 

Following the loss, Butler County dropped to 11-6.

Butler County is scheduled to host visit Edmonson County for a 12th District game on Friday, Jan. 20.
