Bears survive scare from Edmonson; win 20-6

Butler County wrapped up its regular season on Friday night at Brownsville with a 20-6 win over rival Edmonson County. A close game throughout, the Bears employed a solid air attack of 242 yards and a defensive performance resulting in 49 tackles to pull away from the Wildcats for the two-touchdown win.

Scoreless in the first quarter, Martin scored from three yards out with 4:07 left in the first half to get on the board. Leading 6-0 at halftime, Butler County's defensive squad tagged an Edmonson running back for a 7-yard loss for the safety. Toward the end of the third, quarterback Bryce Shanklin hit Jake Martin for a 9-yard touchdown play.

Holding a 14-0 lead in the fourth, Edmonson scratched out a touchdown from 20 yards out with 8:54 left in the game. With Butler's lead narrowed to 14-6, the Bears responded quickly with a 10-yard touchdown run by Shanklin at 6:25 to make the score 20-6 - the final margin of victory as the Bears' defense stopped Edmonson the rest of the way.

The KHSAA Playoffs begin this week. Butler County (7-3) will travel to Murray High School on Friday night as the number 3 seed in Class 2A, District 2.
