Bears split with Wildcats

Lady Bears notch district win over Edmonson County 

MORGANTOWN - Butler County pulled away to beat visiting Edmonson County 48-37 in a 12th District girls' basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 22. 

Following the win, Butler County improved to 14-1 overall and 2-0 in the 12th District.

Edmonson County dropped to 6-12 overall and 1-2 in the 12th District after suffering the loss. 

Butler County and Edmonson County were tied 10-10 at the conclusion of the opening quarter in the 12th District girls' basketball game. Moving out in front, Butler County outscored Edmonson County 17-9 in the second quarter to lead 27-19 at halftime.

Extending its lead out to double digits, Butler County led 36-24 at the conclusion of the third quarter. 

Gracie Cardwell scored 15 points to lead Butler County to the win. Accompanying Cardwell in double figures for Butler County, Jaelyn Taylor netted 10 points.
Narrowly missing double figures for the Lady Bears, Taylin Clark scored nine points and Graci Leach netted eight points.

Rounding out Butler County's individual scoring, Jenna Phelps and Taylor Leach chipped in three points apiece.  

Cariann Williams scored 15 points to pace Edmonson County in the district matchup. Williams was the only Edmonson County player to reach double figures in scoring.

The additional scorers for Edmonson County were Hallie Cassady (seven points), Annie Kiper (six points), Lily Jane Vincent (four points), Paige Wolfe (four points) and Emma White (one point). 

 

Bears drop district game to Edmonson County 

MORGANTOWN - Butler County came up short as visiting Edmonson County held on to win 71-69 in a 12th District boys' basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Following the loss, Butler County dropped to 11-5 overall and 0-2 in the 12th District. 

Edmonson County improved to 10-9 overall and 1-2 in the 12th District after claiming the win. 

Longtime rivals, Butler County and Edmonson County battled back and forth throughout the 12th District boys' basketball matchup. 

The Wildcats outscored the Bears 13-10 in the opening quarter. However, Edmonson County and Butler County were tied 33-33 at halftime.

Remaining even, Edmonson County and Butler County were tied 49-49 at the conclusion of the third quarter. 

The Wildcats outscored the Bears 22-20 in the final quarter to claim the district win. 

Thriving offensively, Edmonson County shot 61.7 percent (29-of-47) from the field. The Wildcats shot 40 percent (six-of-15) from three-point range.

Edmonson County shot 70 percent (seven-of-10) from the free throw line. 

Trace Taylor led Edmonson County to the win, scoring a game-high 26 points and pulling down eight rebounds. 

Accompanying Taylor in double figures for Edmonson County, Braxton Highbaugh netted 11 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for the Wildcats, Braden Wall tallied nine points.

The additional scorers for Edmonson County in the district win were Evan Stice (eight points), Cole Saling (seven points), Will Alexander (six points) and Tyler Anderson (four points). 

Brody Hunt scored a team-best 24 points to lead the Bears. Accompanying Hunt in double figures for Butler County, Jagger Henderson scored 15 points and Solomon Flener netted 10 points.

The additional scorers for Butler County in the setback were Zack Phelps (six points), Isaac Dockery (five points), Colton Tichenor (five points) and Lawson Rice (four points).
