Bears rout Hornets 41-0

The Butler Co. Bears bounced back strong on Friday, October 7, in a 41-0 rout of district opponent Hancock Co. Hornets. The season continues to fly by week after week, the Bears are 4-3 overall and 1-1 in district play.  The Bears opening drive covered seventy-six yards in ten plays. QB Rex Henderson scored on a two yard sneak, the kick was no good. Bears led 6-0 with 8:37 in the first quarter.

The Hornets on its first possession went three plays and were forced to punt; but a high snap sailed over the punters head and the Bears took advantage of the Hornets miscue.  On first and goal from the six yard line, Henderson sprinted around left end to make the score 12-0. The Bears went for the two point conversion, and Henderson hit Gage Ward for the two point pass play. Bears led 14-0 with 6:09 to go in the first quarter of play.

Hancock Co. on its second possession had no luck again with the Bears defensive unit and was forced to punt after only six plays. The Bears would in turn swap a punt right back to the Hornets. The Hornets third possession attempted to mount a drive but after only nine plays were forced to punt again. With the Hornet offense completely shut down, the Bears increased its lead on a quick score going sixty-two yards in only four plays. A Henderson to Ward pass/catch for the touchdown from seventeen yards out for the score, the Logan Richardson kick was good 21-0 with 6:31 to go in the first half of play.

The Hornets fourth possession went only six plays and turned it over on downs.  The Bears put together another sixty-three yard, seven play drive. The big play of this drive was a Henderson to Daltyn Havens pass/catch that covered twenty-seven yards. Havens was stopped just short of the goal line. On first and goal from the one yard line, running back Dillon Brosnan scored, the Richardson kick was good 28-0 Bears with 1:44 left in the half.  The Hornets fifth possession of the night was even shorter, going three plays and punting back to the Bears.

The Bears Defense in the first half of play held the Hornets to seventy-six total yards offense, on only twenty-seven offensive snaps. Seven plays went for no gain or negative yardage. The Bears entire Defensive Unit of  Dalton Lee, Issac Flener, Logan Richardson, Kaleb Hunt, Ty Smith, Blake Graham, Brenden Shanklin, Dillon Brosnan, Warren Cameron, Tavarus Holloway, and Rex Henderson. The Bears Defense played assignment football, and did not give up the big play and recorded the shutout.

The second half of play things got worse for Hancock Co.; on three consecutive possessions the Hornets would commit turnovers of interception, lost fumble, and lost fumble. The Bears Brenden Shanklin picked off the Hornet pass, while defensive end Dalton Lee recovered both lost fumbles.  The Bears offense wasted no time taking advantage of the Hornet mistakes as QB Rex Henderson would score on runs of one and six yards pushing the score to 41-0. By KHSAA rule the running clock went into effect the remainder of the game.

The Hancock Co. offense numbers were even smaller in the second half of play. Hancock Co. would only be able to post eight yards of total offense on sixteen plays. The Bears push their record to 4-3 overall and prepare for the next district opponent McLean Co. Cougars.
