Bears roll past Frederick Fraize, 85-47; face Hancock in regular season finale

 

MORGANTOWN - With its seniors taking their home floor for the final time, Butler County delivered a solid all-around performance on Tuesday night, rolling past visiting Frederick Fraize in a late-season boys' high school basketball game.

Familiar Third Region rivals, Butler County and Frederick Fraize are non-district foes. 

The victory allowed Butler County to halt a two-game losing skid. 

Butler County improved to 10-13 with the win.

Win the loss, its 14th straight setback, Frederick Fraize dropped to 2-23.

The Bears moved ahead early and never faltered, pulling away to win convincingly. Homestanding Butler County forced Frederick Fraize to play from behind throughout the matchup.  

Butler County shot 40.7 percent (33-of-81) from the field. The Bears were 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) from 3-point range. 

Butler County shot 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the free throw line. 

Dominating inside, Butler County pulled down 40 total rebounds. 

Will Moore poured in a game-high 29 points to lead Butler County to the win. Moore drained seven shots inside the arc while connecting on five 3-point field goals. 

Butler County featured three scorers in double figures. Accompanying Moore in double figures for the Bears, Caleb Beasley scored 19 points and Brennan Grubb added 11 points. 

Narrowly missing double figures in the Butler County scoring column, Jaden Hurt netted nine points. 

Beasley flirted with a double-double, pulling down a game-high nine rebounds. Ranking as Butler County's second-leading rebounder, Hurt collected eight rebounds for the Bears. 

Other scorers for Butler County in the win were Parker Rice (seven points), Daltyn Havens (five points), Justin Elms (two points), Leevi McMillin (two points) and Jordan McCrady (one point). 

Butler County is scheduled to visit Hancock County for a regular-season finale at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The Bears are slated to compete in the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament in less than one week.

Bears to visit Hancock County for regular-season finale 

MORGANTOWN - Butler County will conclude the regular-season portion of its 2017-18 campaign on the road at Hancock County on Thursday night. The Bears and Hornets are set to meet for the second time in the 2017-18 season.

In a mid-season matchup on December 29, then-visitor Hancock County managed to edge the Bears 42-41. 

Butler County's leading scorer, Will Moore, found himself limited to nine points in the first contest versus Hancock County. Moore, one of the top players in the Third Region, faced heavy defensive pressure throughout the previous contest versus Hancock County. 

Currently, Moore is averaging a team-high 21.3 points per game for the Bears. He has scored nearly 500 points in 23 games. 

Butler County will carry a 10-13 record into its regular-season finale.

Jaxson Gray and Jacob White lead the way for Hancock County. Gray and White have averaged double figures in scoring for the Hornets throughout the 2017-18 season. The productive Gray scored a team-high 20 points when Hancock County edged the Bears earlier in late-December.

Hancock County is 14-13. Following the home game versus Butler County, Hancock County is scheduled to visit Grayson County for a regular-season finale on Friday night. 

Butler County, under the direction of head coach Calvin Dockery, returned to the win column on Tuesday night. The Bears beat visiting Frederick Fraize 85-47 in their home finale. 

Hancock County is under the tutelage of head coach Darren Lynam. The Hornets have notched three straight wins. Hancock County pulled away to defeat Cannelton, Ind., 76-44 on Tuesday night. The Hornets boast additional wins over Madison-Hancock Christian (Indiana), Whitesville Trinity, Frederick Fraize, Lighthouse Christian Academy, Russellville, Tell City (Indiana), Walden, McLean County and Apollo. Hancock County has dropped games to Ohio County, Breckinridge County, St. Francis, Heritage Hills (Indiana), Central Hardin, Whitesville Trinity, Meade County, Owensboro Catholic, Daviess County, South Spencer (Indiana), Evansville Reitz (Indiana), Edmonson County and Meade County.  

Both the Bears and Hornets will compete in their respective district tournaments in less than one week.  

Tip-off for the latest Butler County-Hancock County boys' basketball game is set for 7 p.m. in Hawesville on Thursday night.
