Bears roll over McLean 57-6 on Senior Night

It was all Butler County all night long as the home-standing Bears easily dispatched the visiting McLean County Cougars on Friday night in a Class 2A, District 2 playoff game at Morgantown.   Butler County (5-3, 2-2) scored early and often, resulting in a "running clock" midway through the second quarter.

Plagued by poor field position most of the night, McLean County went three-and-out on its first possession to set up the Bears' first score.  Butler County employed a little trickery on its first play as quarterback Jimmy Burns passed to receiver Zeke Woodcock, who then tossed the ball on a lateral to Bryce Shanklin for a 16-yard gain.  Jake Martin rolled for a 36-yard gain and Burns found Matt Moore, who went up high for the 20-yard touchdown play.

On McLean's next play, Butler County defensive lineman Peyton Bratcher rushed across the line of scrimmage and actually "intercepted" a pitch from the McLean quarterback.  Bratcher scored from 25 yards out at 8:04 to give the Bears a 12-0 lead.

The Bears found the end zone again - this time at the 6:05 mark on a pass from Burns to Jake Martin from 34 yards out.
The Bears' scoring continued after a Caleb Deweese interception as Shanklin connected with Woodcock for a touchdown at 4:23 in the first.  Leading 25-0 after the first quarter, the Bears added 20 more points in the second.

McLean threatened to score on its next possession - exploding for a 51-yard gain but the play was called back due to a penalty.

A 16-yard gain by Cody White started the Bears' next drive.  Burns hit Drake Embry for a pair of pass completions.  White crossed the goal line on second-and-goal from the 2-yard line.

An interception by Woodcock led to another Butler County touchdown - this one by Travis Brooks on first-and-goal at the 3-yard line.  Brooks' score enacted the running clock as the Bears led 39-0.

Still, Butler County managed another touchdown in the half on 32-yard completion from Burns to Embry.  The halftime score was 45-0.

Carries by White, Walker Weathers, and Brooks helped set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Weathers at 5:25 in the third quarter.

McLean had a 71-yard return on the ensuing kick-off but another interception by Deweese (second on the night) resulted in a 44-yard gain.  Rex Henderson ran it in from 21 yards out at 7:30 in the fourth for the Bears final score.

McLean got on the board at 2:30 on a 53-yard run but the game was never in doubt.  Butler County cruised to a 57-6 win.
