Bears pull away to beat Grayson County, 65-54

MORGANTOWN - Breaking into the win column, Butler County pulled away to beat visiting Grayson County 65-54 in a 12th District boys' basketball game on Monday, Jan. 25.

After notching the win, Butler County improved to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the 12th District.

Grayson County dropped to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the district following the loss. 

Butler County shook a slow start to claim the district win. Starting strong, Grayson County outscored Butler County 20-13 in the first quarter. The Cougars led 39-31 at halftime but faltered late. 

The Bears, under the direction of Coach Calvin Dockery, battled back to lead 47-43 at the conclusion of the third quarter. 

Solomon Flener and Levi McMillin combined to lead Butler County to the district win, scoring 15 points apiece for the Bears.

Butler County featured four scorers in double figures. Jagger Henderson netted 13 points and Brody Hunt tossed in 10 points as Butler County prevailed. 

Narrowly missing double figures, Hayden Hodge netted nine points for the Bears.

Rounding out Butler County's individual scoring, Isaac Dockery chipped in three points.

Defensively, Butler County limited Grayson County after halftime. 

Grayson County shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the field. The Cougars were 3-of-12 (25 percent) from 3-point range.

Grayson County shot 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the free throw line. 

Chandler McCrady paced Grayson County, scoring a game-high 16 points for the Cougars. Accompanying McCrady in double figures in scoring for Grayson County, River Blanton added 12 points. 

Narrowly missing double figures, Hunter Tomes and Keegan Sharp netted nine points apiece for the Cougars. 

Rounding out Grayson County's individual scoring, Dillon Horn contributed four points while Nolan Hornbeck and Brayden Childress chipped in two points apiece.
