Bears outlast Todd County Central in overtime, 27-21

ELKTON — Colton Dunnells reached the endzone on a one-yard touchdown and Layton Phelps provided a pass breakup on the defensive side to allow visiting Butler County to beat Todd County Central 27-21 in overtime in a Class 2A, District 2 game Friday, Oct. 14.

Following the win, Butler County improved to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in Class 2A, District 2.

Todd County Central dropped to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in Class 2A, District 2 after suffering the loss. 

Butler County scored first and never trailed. However, Todd County Central managed to pull even with the Bears on multiple occasions, including during the fourth quarter. 

After each team reached the endzone once, Butler County and Todd County Central were tied 7-7 at the conclusion of the first quarter. 

The Bears returned to the endzone twice in the second quarter to lead 21-7 at halftime.

But Todd County Central wouldn't go away. The Rebels held the Bears scoreless in the second half to force the Class 2A, District 2 game into overtime.

Butler County led 21-13 at the end of the third quarter. Todd County Central pulled even at the 9:26 mark of the fourth quarter, tying the game 21-21. 

Butler County, under the direction of Coach Brandon Embry, produced offensively and defensively in overtime to pull out the district win. 

Butler County rushed 34 times for 204 yards and four touchdowns. Dunnells led the Bears, rushing 18 times for 102 yards and three touchdowns.

Behind Dunnells in Butler County's offensive attack, Brody Hunt rushed nine times for 57 yards and one touchdown.

Phelps paced Butler County through the air, completing seven of 11 passes for 37 yards.

Keagen Grubb and Luke Laughing combined to haul in seven receptions for 37 yards for the Bears.

Carson Miller paced Butler County defensively, recording a game-high 16 tackles for the Bears. Delivering on offense and defense for Butler County, Dunnells recorded 12 tackles. 

Gage Beasley tallied nine tackles for the Bears while Lonnie Phelps and Devin Poston registered eight tackles apiece in Butler County's thrilling victory. 

Producing in the secondary for the Bears. Hunt and Laughing each recorded one interception. 

Butler County is scheduled to host Clinton County for a non-district game on Friday, Oct. 21.
