Bears outlast Edmonson County for district win, 66-63

MORGANTOWN - Butler County halted a two-game losing skid on Tuesday night, defeating visiting Edmonson County 66-63 in a key late-season 12th District boys' basketball game.  Senior guard Will Moore poured in a game-high 35 points to lead Butler County to the district win. Moore was 14-of-17 from the free throw line in the Bears' triumph over Edmonson County. 

With the win, Butler County improved to 9-11 overall and 2-3 in the 12th District.  Edmonson County dropped to 7-16 overall and 0-4 in the district with the loss. 

The Bears returned to the win column after suffering back-to-back losses to district rival Whitesville Trinity and Hart County.

Butler County, under the direction of head coach Calvin Dockery, shot 44.4 percent (20-of-45) from the field. The Bears were 6-of-15 (40 percent) from 3-point range. 

Butler County shot 74.1 percent (20-of-47) from the free throw line. 

Highly productive around the goal, Butler County pulled down 35 total rebounds. 

Brennan Grubb accompanied Moore in double figures for the Bears, scoring 12 points. Moore and Grubb combined to connected on five 3-point field goals for the Bears.

Jaden Hurt added eight points and a team-high eight rebounds for Butler County in the winning effort.

Butler County featured five different scorers as Parker Rice chipped in seven points and Caleb Beasley added four points.

Logan Lindsey and Tucker Cole combined to lead Edmonson County in the setback. 

The Bears swept the Wildcats in the 2017-18 edition of the 12th District regular-season series.

Butler County and Edmonson County could meet again in the postseason. Both Butler County and Edmonson County will compete in the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament later in the month. 

Butler County has regular-season games remaining versus Muhlenberg County, Whitesville Trinity, Glasgow, Cloverport and Hancock County. The Bears are scheduled to travel to Whitesville Trinity on Friday night for a girl-boy 12th District doubleheader.  The Lady Bears will play at 6 p.m. with the Bears to follow at approximately 7:45 p.m.
