Bears lose to Hart County in district opener

MORGANTOWN — Butler County couldn't overcome an early deficit as Hart County won 50-15 in a Class 3A, District 2 game on Friday, Sept. 20.

The Bears hosted the Raiders for a Class 3A, District 2 opener.

Following the loss, Butler County dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in Class 3A, District 2. 

Hart County moved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Class 3A, District 2 after registering the win. 

Setting the tone early, Hart County outscored the Bears 22-0 in the opening quarter.

Hart County, which entered the game ranked second in Class 3A, led 43-7 at halftime and continued to control the district matchup throughout the second half. 

Quarterback Garrett Phelps paced the Bears. Through the air, Phelps completed 16 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Phelps rushed seven times for 70 yards. Prior to this game Phelps was number two in the state with 1235 yards according to Max Preps and second in passing on KHSAA-3A.

Another Butler County rusher, Lonnie Phelps, took eight carries for 28 yards. 

Kellon Meredith paced Butler County in receiving. Meredith hauled in eight receptions for 88 yards and one touchdown.

Along with Meredith, Clayton Deweese and Trever Deweese reeled in multiple receptions for the Bears. 

Defensively for Butler County, Meredith recorded a team-high 12 tackles. Following Meredith in the key defensive category, Lonnie Phelps posted 10 tackles. Another Butler County defensive player, Kevin Robins, delivered nine tackles. 

Butler County is scheduled to visit Franklin-Simpson for another Class 3A, District 2 game on Friday, Sept. 27. 

Once again Dr. Hammad made a very generous donation to the Butler County School system to cover the cost of all BCS students admission into home sporting events.
