Bears, Lady Bears stay undefeated in district play with wins over Trinity

Both the Butler County girls' and boys' basketball teams remained undefeated in 12th District play on Friday night with convincing wins over Whitesville Trinity.  The Lady Bears easily dispatched the Lady Raiders 67-23.  In the second game of the boy-girl doubleheader, the Bears broke open a close game in the second half on their way to a 60-41 win.  Both squads are now 2-0 in district play with games against Grayson County and Edmonson County looming.

The Butler County Lady Bears set a dominant tone early on Friday night with a 20-10 first-quarter run against the Trinity Lady Raiders.  An 8-point quarter by senior Katie Graham sparked the Lady Bears' run, along with early three-pointers by Allie Easley and Lynsie Clark.  Butler had an equally impressive second quarter, outscoring Trinity 20-9 to take a 40-19 lead into halftime.  The Lady Bears went on a 11-3 run at the end of the second on baskets by Madison "Boo" Clark, Shawna West, Chloe Flener, and a three-pointer by Callie Cardwell.

Lynsie Clark exploded for ten points in the third quarter to continue Butler's dominance.  Baskets by Clark, Flener, and McKenzie Smith pushed the Lady Bears to a 36-point lead at 57-21, which enacted a running clock.  Addison Hall, Cardwell, and Ariel Phelps added baskets down the stretch for the 67-23 win.

Butler County and Whitesville Trinity played neck-and-neck for the first half before the Bears were able to put the game away in the second half. 

Baskets by Caleb Deweese and Zeke Woodcock paced the Bears' early scoring efforts.  Clinging to a narrow 9-8 first quarter lead, the Raiders drilled a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter to move ahead 18-14 at one point in the quarter.  A free throw by Zack Burden, along with baskets by Blake Graham, Drew Henderson, Baylee Anderson, Woodcock, and Trevor Jenkins gave the Bears a 28-25 halftime lead.

Early baskets by Burden, Woodcock, Rex Henderson, Deweese and Jenkins pushed the Bears to a 46-33 third quarter advantage.

Anderson hit a three early in the fourth to give the Bears a 15-point advantage at 49-34.  Fourth quarter baskets by Woodcock, Deweese, and Burden helped give Butler County a 60-41 win.

Butler County had three players in double figures - Deweese with 14, Woodcock with 13, and Burden with 11.  Jenkins and Woodcock had 10 and 9 rebounds, respectively, while Woodcock led the team with five assists.  The Bears were 26/71 in field goals (36.6%); 6/21 in three-point goals (28.6%); and 3/8 in free throws (37.5%).
