Bears, Lady Bears pick up weekend wins

 Last weekend was a productive one for the Butler County High School Bears and Lady Bears basketball teams.  On Friday, the boys' team defeated Hancock County  65-52, while Lady Bears recorded a 64-53 win over Warren East.  Both games were played in Morgantown. 


The Bears, who raced to a 13-point first quarter advantage, placed three players in double figures, led by Zeke Woodcock's 18 points; Elijah Flener and Trevor Jenkins had 12 apiece.  Butler County controlled the game throughout, enjoying a 36-19 halftime lead en route to a 65-52 win over Hancock County.

"The guys had good energy once again.  This being the third game in four days they performed very well," said Butler County head coach Calvin Dockery.   "We met all our defensive goals except for the third quarter where we were outscored 21-17.  Our goal defensively, is to give up less than 14 per quarter."

Butler County (4-3, 3-0) returns to action Monday night at home against Todd County Central.  JV will tip at 6 p.m. with the varsity game to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Lady Bears fell behind in the first quarter but rallied in the second for a 29-23 halftime lead over visiting Warren East.  The steady Lady Bears built on that lead in the second half to earn the 64-53 win. 

Katie Graham led the way for Butler County with a 28-point performance. Madeline Drake added 11.

Butler County (5-3, 2-1) will be enjoying an early Christmas break with no game scheduled until December 27.  The Lady Bears will play in the Farmers' National Bank Holiday Bash on December 27-29, where they will face Metcalfe County and Greenwood, among other opponents.
