Bears go 3-1 at Marshall County Slugfest; drop game to Grayson

Error proved costly for Graves County as Butler County picked up a 5-3 win on Friday night in the first game of the Marshall County Slugfest. The Bears jumped on Graves County early on their way to a 5-3 win on Friday at Marshall County in seven innings, scoring three runs in the first inning.

Butler County staved off Graves County as Graves was unable to match Butler County down the stretch.

 

One run in the top of the second helped Graves County close its deficit to 3-1. An error gave Graves County life but the Bears held on for the win. 

Hitting singles for Buter County were Taylor Kig, Abigain Fry (2, 2-RBI), Kelsey Smith (2-RBI), and Madison Clark.  Natoshia White doubled.

Kassie Jo Phelps recorded the win for Butler County. She allowed three runs over seven innings. She struck out none, walked two and surrendered 11 hits.

Butler County made the most of 8 hits in 7-3 victory over host Marshall County.  Butler and Marshall both had scoring chances on Saturday, but it was the Bears that were able to capitalize on them as they pulled out a 7-3 win.

Marshall County had nine hits compared with the Butler County's eight, but Marshall county stranded nine runners on base.

Callie Cardwell went a perfect 2-2 at the plate for Butler County. She singled in the second inning and doubled in the fourth inning.

Butler County stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the second, scoring three runs on a solo home run by Hannah Peach, a groundout by Naomi Cade, and an RBI-single by Cardwell.

After posting one run in the third, Butler County again scored one in the fourth. In the third, the Bears scored on an error, plating Lynsie Clark.

Cardwell, Emily Rich and Kassie Phelps all doubled for Butler County, while Naomi Cade and Amy Rogers each had an RBI. 

Kassie Jo Phelps was a workhorse on the rubber while bagging the win for Butler County. She allowed one earned run, nine hits and no walks while striking out four over seven innings of work.

Butler County dropped a 10-0 decision to Union County in its second game on Saturday. 

The lead stayed with Union County after the first, when it scored three runs on a two-run home run and an RBI single. Union County increased its lead with four runs in the third.

 

Butler County managed only two hits - both singles by Taylor King and Kassie Phelps. 

Kassie Jo Phelps was charged with the loss. She allowed 10 runs in four innings, walked one and struck out one.

Butler County used a big third inning to beat St. Mary, 15-0, in its last tournament game at Mike Miller Park.

Amy Rogers racked up three RBIs on four hits for Butler County. She homered in the first inning and singled in the second, third, and fourth innings.  The Bears stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring two runs on a two-run home run by Rogers.

Butler County tacked on another four runs in the second. Taylor King started the inning with a single, scoring Callie Cardwell and Naomi Cade. That was followed up by Rogers' single, scoring Lynsie Clark.

Kassie Jo Phelps recorded the win for Butler County. She pitched four shutout innings. She struck out two, walked none and surrendered five hits.

Recording hits for Butler County were Lynsie Clark (3-1B, RBI), Taylor King (2-1B, 3-RBI), Amy Rogers (HR, 3-1B, 3-RBI), Natoshia White (1B), Hannah Peach (3B, 1B, 3-RBI), Emily Rich (2-1B, RBI), Callie Cardwell (3-1B), Naomi Cade (1B).

Prior to last weekend's tournament, Butler County fell 11-6 to Grayson County on Thursday, March 20.  Amy Rogers went 3-4 and scored two runs for the Bears. She doubled in the third inning and singled in the first and fifth innings.

Decker got the win for Grayson County despite allowing six runs over seven innings. She struck out three, walked two and gave up nine hits.

Grayson County was sparked by England and Milliner, who teamed up for six hits and two RBIs.

Kassie Jo Phelps took the loss for Butler County. She allowed 11 runs in seven innings, walked one and struck out two.

In the bottom of the first, Butler County grabbed the early lead, 2-0. The Bears' attack began with a single from Taylor King. A single by Abigail Fry then moved Taylor from first to second. Butler County then tacked on more runs when Fry scored on a fielder's choice.

Grayson County never surrendered the lead after the third inning, scoring six runs on two errors, a fielder's choice, a sacrifice fly by Decker, and an RBI-single by England.

One run in the bottom of the fifth helped Butler County close their deficit to 8-5. An error sparked the Bears' rally. Finally, Decker got Hannah Peach to strike out to end the threat.

One Butler County run crossed the plate in the bottom half of the sixth, making the score 10-6. An RBI-single by Taylor King gave the Butler County life. But, Decker got Fry to ground out to end the inning.

Six defensive errors proved too costly for the Bears to overcome.
