Bears get win, Lady Bears fall at Grayson

The Butler County boys' basketball team extended its perfect district record to 4-0 on Friday night with a solid 64-52 win over Grayson County at Leitchfield.  Meanwhile, the Lady Bears dropped a hard-fought 71-56 decision to the Lady Cougars.  The win for the Bears essentially assures the boys a top seed come district tournament time, while the girls' picture isn't entirely clear as Grayson, Edmonson and Butler are all locked in a three-way district battle

Early baskets by Trevor Jenkins, Alex Hall, Zeke Woodcock, Elijah Flener, and Brandon Thomas gave the Bears a 15-10 first quarter margin.  Up 25-17 in the second quarter, Grayson mounted a comeback as baskets by Talon Gary helped narrow the Cougar deficit to five at 27-22.

Grayson County kept up the pressure in the opening minutes of the third quarter with a five-point run to tie the game at 27 apiece.  A quick time-out by Butler County coach Calvin Dockery was able to refocus the Bears as multiple baskets by Alex Hall and a basket by Woodcock stopped the Cougar rally.  Butler held a 46-35 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Butler County maintained that lead in the fourth en route to a 64-52 win.

The game featured three ties and two lead changes.  Butler's biggest lead was 20 at 56-36.

The Butler County Lady Bears played district rival Grayson County on Friday night.   After beating the Lady Cougars at home, the Lady Bears were hoping for a similar outcome.  Things were different this time around as Coach Christy Clark’s team was not at full strength.  Junior guard Lynsie Clark was sick with a stomach virus and Madeline Drake was coming off a knee injury.

First quarter action saw the Lady Cougars up 17-11, with a battle between Butler County’s Shawna West and Grayson County’s Maddie Stewart.  At half time, West had 10 points while Stewart had racked up 20 points.  The Lady Bears shot 23% from the field while Grayson hit 15 of 25 shots for 60% in the first half.

At half Butler County was down 36-27.  The third quarter belonged to the Lady Bears as Madeline Drake went on a hot shooting streak.  Grayson County took over in the fourth quarter to pick up the win 71-56. Grayson County’s Stewart finished the game with 32 points and Kaylan Shull chipped in 21 points.
