Bears fall to Owensboro in region semifinals

OWENSBORO — Butler County faced a deficit at the end of each quarter as Owensboro prevailed 95-77 in the semifinals of the 3rd Region Boys' Basketball Tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Saturday, March 4. 

The Bears pushed the Red Devils throughout the first half of the region tournament game. 

Owensboro led 20-16 at the end of the first quarter but managed to add to its advantage. 

The Red Devils led 42-33 at halftime, forcing Butler County to continue to play from behind midway throughout the postseason matchup.

Stretching its lead after the intermission period, Owensboro led 65-42 at the end of the third quarter. 

Owensboro shot 59.6 percent (31-of-52) from the field in the region tournament game. The Red Devils made 10 of 20 three-pointers, shooting 50 percent from three-point range.

Owensboro, which featured five scorers in double figures, shot 56.1 percent (23-of-41) from the free throw line. 

Kenyatta Carbon scored 20 points to lead the Red Devils. Joining Carbon in double figures for Owensboro, Dayshawn Sanders scored 18 points, Cayman Powell netted 15 points, Ethan Pendleton posted 12 points and Jonathan Moss contributed 11 points. 

Finishing outside of double figures, Jiairius Webb (nine points), Talas Tayor (eight points) and Will Hume (two points) accounted for Owensboro's other scoring. 

Ty Price poured in a game-high 41 points to lead the Bears. 

Accompanying Price in double figures for Butler County, Lawson Rice netted 14 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for Butler County, Trever Deweese scored nine points. 

Chipping in offensively, Luke Laughing (five points), Justin Castlen (four points), Keagen Grubb (two points) and Kolton Hudson (two points) accounted for Butler County's additional scoring. 

Following the loss, Butler County exited the 2022-23 boys' high school basketball season 22-11.
