Bears fall to Hancock County in district game

 HAWESVILLE — Butler County suffered its first setback in the 2022 high school football season as homestanding Hancock County pulled away to win 28-0 in a Class 2A, District 2 game on Friday. Sept. 30.

Following the loss, Butler County dropped to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in Class 2A, District 2. 

Hancock County moved to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in Class 2A, District 2 after notching the win. 

The Class 2A, District 2 game was scoreless at the conclusion of the first quarter. Hancock County scored and added a two-point conversion during the second quarter to lead 8-0 at halftime.

Stretching its lead shortly after the intermission period, Hancock County led 16-0 at the end of the third quarter 

Quarterback Cole Dixon completed eight of 19 passes for 94 yards and one touchdown to lead the Hornets to the district win. Dixon connected with Evan Ferry on a touchdown pass. Ferry paced Hancock County in receiving, making three catches for 43 yards. 

Producing on the ground for the Hornets, Jack Duncan, Drew Lyday and Landon Garrison added one rushing touchdown apiece in the Class 2A, District 2 matchup. 

The Bears finished with 157 yards of total offense in the loss. Garrett Phelps led Butler County's offensive attack, completing nine of 13 passes for 74 yards.

Keagen Grubb emerged as Butler County's leading receiver, hauling in five receptions for 52 yards.

Colton Dunnells paced Butler County on the ground, rushing 12 times for 40 yards.

Ranking as Butler County's second-leading rusher, Brody Hunt rushed 11 times for 35 yards. 

Defensively for Butler County, Carson Miller recorded 14 tackles.

Following Miller, Dunnells and Devin Poston tallied 10 tackles apiece for the Bears.

Butler County is scheduled to host Owensboro Catholic for a Class 2A, District 2 game on Thursday, Oct. 6.
