Bears Fall to Aces 42-28

In a playoff game type atmosphere, fans were treated to a whale of a ballgame between the Bears and the Aces of Owensboro Catholic. With the district championship on the line as is usually the case the game was not be decided until late in the final quarter of play; and the Aces would squeak out a win 42-28.

Owensboro Catholic entered the game at 4-1 record, and with sophomore sensation running back #5 Von Williams who entered the game averaging 173 yards per game, and the #2 rusher in the state in Class 2A. The Bears Defense did something no other opponent had done all season; holding Williams to forty-seven total yards rushing on the night in seventeen carries.

Despite the outcome, the Bears Defense turned in the best performance of the season forcing Owensboro Catholic, four QB sacks, one interception, one lost fumble, and thirteen plays resulting in negative yardage on the night. Let’s look at how the game played out quarter by quarter.

Owensboro Catholic took the opening possession of the game scoring on a ten play drive that covered fifty-five yards getting on the scoreboard first, 7-0 Catholic with 9:00 minutes to play in the first quarter of play.  The Bears first possession on the night the Bears would turn the ball over on downs not being able to convert on fourth down at midfield. But the Bears defense would respond as Daltyn Havens would intercept a Catholic pass and return it for twenty-eight yards.

The Bears looking to convert the turnover pushed the ball down the field with catches by Gage Ward of 8 and 13yds; and Havens with a 16 yard catch. But on the tenth play of the drive Catholic would intercept to regain possession. Catholic on its next possession would go three plays and punt from their own end zone.

The Bears third possession of the night with great field possession at their own thirty-eight yard line took only five plays to find the end zone and tie the score at 7-7. QB Rex Henderson sprinted ten yards for the touchdown, the Logan Richardson kick good with 9:51 left in the second quarter of play. Momentum swinging to the Bears at this point, as on Catholic’s next possession Williams would fumble on second down, Bears recovered.

The Bears fourth possession with good field position at their own 38; big plays by wide receiver Brendan Shanklin a 12 yard catch; and running back Houston Hampton on a 18yd run up the middle to the Bears 11 yard line. Henderson on first down would pick up three yards to get the ball to the eight yard line; but on 2nd and 3rd downs Henderson would be sacked for loss and on fourth down the pass would fall incomplete. Catholic took over on downs. The Bears defense would again force Catholic to punt the ball back after only four plays.  The Bears would punt the ball right back going three plays and out on the next possession also.

Owensboro Catholic on its last possession of the first half took only two plays going forty-eight yards for the score, kick good 14-7 Catholic led with only 1:05 remaining in the first half of play.  Running back Houston Hampton gave the Bears solid field position returning the kick to midfield; and with time running out on the last play of the half Henderson hit ward for a touchdown pass as time expired in the first half of play; the Richardson kick was good 14-14 as both teams went to the locker room.

Early in the third quarter of play Catholic takes advantage of turnovers; a Bears fumble would result in a quick score for Catholic, 21-14 with 11:09 in the third quarter. An onside kick recovered by the Aces immediately after the score; but the Bears defense responded and forced Catholic to go three plays and punt. The Catholic defense forces a Bears punt in return.

With 8:08 in the 3rd quarter of play Catholic extended the lead to 28-14. The Bears on the next possession would put together a drive; big catches by Blake Graham for ten yards and Shanklin a thirty-four yard catch pushed the ball to the three yard line; but would turn the ball over on downs to Catholic four plays later. The Bears defense held forcing another Catholic punt from its own end zone, the short punt and a Catholic penalty placed the ball on the eighteen yard line for the Bears. Five plays later running back Dillon Brosnan would score from four yards out; the Richardson kick good; 28-21 score with 0:19 seconds left in the third.

The Bears defense with momentum held Catholic to three plays and punt again; the Bears were led defensively by linebacker Ty Smith and lineman Issac Flener and company. The Bears taking over at midfield after the punt,  mounted a seven play drive going forty-eight yards to tie the score at 28-28 with 7:29 left to play in the game.

Catholic would put together two scores late in the game; regaining the lead 35-28 with 5:42 remaining, and another to go up 42-28 with 1:38 left to play.  The Bears fall to 3-3 on the season, and must regroup quickly with three district games in a row at Hancock Co., McLean Co., and Todd Co. to assure a first round home playoff game and a #2 seed in the district the Bears need to sweep all three games. Here is a look at the stats from the Catholic game.
