Bears fall 46-16 to Mustangs; being district play Friday against Catholic

Butler County played hard and competitive for much of the game Friday night before falling 46-16 to the Muhlenberg County Mustangs on homecoming night-Friday, September 14.

The Bears had a new look on offense with Jagger Henderson taking the snaps at quarterback and Bryar Beasley as a running back.  Butler County moved the ball consistently throughout the game and reached the end zone twice.

In the first half, Henderson passed to Keeton Diaz for a 4-yard touchdown pass; Henderson connected with Dawson Carroll for the 2-point conversion. The touched capped a 6-play drive.

In the Bears' first possession of the second half, a 14-play drive resulted in another touchdown - this one on a 2-yard run by Warren Cameron.  Beasley converted the 2-point conversion from three yards out.

The Mustangs used several big yardage plays to rack up the points on their way to the 46-16 win.  Nevertheless, the Bears have shown improvement through the first four games.

"I thought we played pretty well offensively for the most part.  We had several kids step up in the running game," said head coach Brandon Embry.  "We successfully moved the ball most of the night.  We shot ourselves in the foot on multiple occasions with penalties on long plays."

Missed assignments and tackling woes plagued the Bears on the defensive side of the ball, according to Embry.

"Defensively we have to stop blowing assignments and tackle much better," said Embry.

The Bears begin district play this week with Owensboro Catholic coming to Morgantown.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.  The game will be live on WLBQ 101.5 and streamed live on the Beech Tree News and WLBA Facebook pages.

"They (Catholic) are coming off impressive wins over Owensboro and Apollo.  We have to contain their athletes and limit their big plays," said Embry.
