Bears fall 17-13 to Russellville in hard-fought contest; will host Apollo on Friday night

The Butler County Bears battled hard for four quarters on Friday night before falling 17-13 to the home-standing Russellville Panthers.  Trailing 17-0 at the half, Bear defensive back Josh Morris recovered a mishandled fumble by the Russellville punter at the 42-yard line.  The result was an 8-play scoring drive that ended with an 8-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bryar Beasley to wide-out Dawson Carroll.  An extra-point kick by Keaton Diaz made the score 17-7.

On Butler's second possession of the third quarter, the Bears' offense put together a sustained drive that led to another touchdown - 70 yards in 11 plays.  There were several big plays on the drive, including a 24-yard catch by Warren Cameron and a 27-yard run by Ethan Lawrence.  On fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line, quarterback Bryar Beasley ran a keeper for the touchdown.  The extra-point attempt was blocked but the Bears had narrowed the deficit to four points at 17-13.

While the Bear defense effectively shut down the Panther offense in the second half, Butler County's offense threatened again late in the game but came up short with an untimely interception.  Russellville held on for the 17-13 win.

"We cleaned up a lot of the mistakes from the first two weeks.  In turn we had a good defensive outing against a pretty good Russellville offense," said head coach Brandon Embry.  "Offensively we did a much better job protecting the ball and that resulted in better offensive production.  I was proud of our guys for the fight they put up against a good Russellville team.  We didn't come out on top but it was still a good showing for us."

Butler County (0-3) will return to action on Friday, September 7, at home against Apollo (3-0).  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.  The game will be aired lived on WLBQ 101.5 and streamed on the Beech Tree News and WLBQ Facebook pages.

"We must continue to clean things up on both sides of the ball this week in preparation for a 3-0 Apollo team," said Embry.  "They are very big up front and overall a deep team talent wise.  We must slow down their running attack as they have one of the top backs in the area."
