Bears claim district win over Cougars; Lady Bears battle but come up short

Butler County pushed past Grayson County 80-71 in a 12th District boys' basketball game on Friday, Feb. 2. After registering the win, Butler County improved to 13-6 overall and 4-0 in the 12th District.Grayson County dropped to 11-9 overall and 3-1 in the 12th District following the loss.  

The Bears carried a lead out of each quarter, edging Grayson County 18-17 in the opening period. 

Extending its lead, Butler County led 40-30 at halftime. 

The Calvin Dockery-coached Bears led 61-52 at the conclusion of the third quarter. 

Ty Price scored a game-high 33 points to lead Butler County to the win.

Accompanying Price in double figures for Butler County, Lawson Rice netted 17 points. 

Joining Price and Rice in double figures for the Bears, Briar Griffin scored 13 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for Butler County, Trever Deweese tallied nine points.

Rounding out Butler County's scoring, Justin Castlen added five points and Clayton Deweese contributed three points. 

A Region 3 title contender, Butler County notched its sixth straight win.

Lady Bears drop district game to Grayson County 

MORGANTOWN — Butler County came up short as Grayson County held on to win 46-40 in a 12th District girls' basketball game on Friday, Feb. 2. 

Following the loss, Butler County slipped to 12-10 overall and 3-2 in the 12th District. 

Grayson County improved to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in the 12th District after registering the win.  Visiting Grayson County carried a lead out of each quarter, edging Butler County 13-11 in the opening period. 


Grayson County led 25-16 at halftime and maintained a lead heading into the final quarter.

The Lady Cougars led 33-29 at the end of the third period. 

Ava Wilson and Ann Marie Skaggs scored 12 points apiece to lead Butler County in the 12th District girls' basketball matchup. 

Accompanying Wilson and Skaggs in double figures for Butler County, Taylor Leach netted 10 points.

Rounding out Butler County's scoring, Parker Willoughby and Addison Miller added three points apiece. 

 

Butler County is scheduled to visit Edmonson County for another 12th District girls' basketball game on Friday, Feb. 9.
