Bears Celebrate a Season to Remember

The Varsity Team next to their 12th District Championship Banner.

The Butler County Bears Basketball Team gathered Saturday at the Butler County Educational Complex for their annual awards banquet.  The ceremony began with a welcome by Teresa Woodcock and Coach Dockery, a prayer from Zeke Woodcock, and then a catered meal.

Coach Calvin Dockery

After the meal, Coach Dockery started the awards ceremony.  John Payton, Nolan Johnson, Rex Henderson, Barry Washer, Trevor Jenkins, Zeke Woodcock, Elijah Flener, Alex Hall, and Brandon Thomas were all awarded with an academic certificate for maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher.  Two players were then honored for their career scoring achievements. Both Elijah Flener and Trevor Jenkins joined the 1,000 Point Club this season.

Coach Dockery then gave out ten individual awards.  First was the “Newcomer of the Year” Award which was given to 8th grader, Rex Henderson.  The Gamer Award was given to Zack Burden for his toughness and energy on the court.  Trevor Jenkins received the Sharp Shooter Award.  The Warrior Award was given to Zeke Woodcock for his determination.  Alex Hudnall won the Most Improved Award.  The Dedication Award was given to Elijah Flener.  Jared Rose took home the Desire Award.  The Coaches Award was given to Alex Hall.  The 110% Award was won by Brandon Thomas.

A new award was then explained by Assistant Coach Steve McLean.  All year Coach McLean kept up with what he called Bear Points.  Players either earned Bear Points for doing something positive on the court (such as diving for a loose ball) or were deducted Bear Points for negatives (committing a turnover).  The Bear Award was for the player who had the most Bear Points at the end of the season.  Zeke Woodcock took home the award with 444 total points.

This season was one to remember.  The Bears finished with an overall record of 20-12 (8-0 in District).  They were also 12th District Champions (1st time in over 50 years) and 3rd region All A Champions (1st time in school history).

Coach Dockery closed the ceremony by commemorating seniors Alex Hall, Elijah Flener, Alex Hudnall, Brandon Thomas, and Jared Rose.

To commemorate the Bears unforgettable season, the Hampton Company has designed a prepaid shirt that they will be selling.  The cost is $10 for a T-shirt and $20 for a sweatshirt.  If you would like to buy one, please contact Teresa Woodcock by phone at (270)999-2668 or by e-mail at [email protected]
