BEARS' BASKETBALL: Q&A with Coach Dustin Barnett
Coach Dustin Barnett Leads Butler County Boys Basketball into a New Era
“Hustle, Perseverance, and Togetherness” — Coach Barnett outlines his vision for
the Bears’ program.
First-year Butler County Boys' Basketball Head Coach Dustin Barnett sat down to share his thoughts on stepping into the head coaching role, his expectations for the team, and what fans can look forward to this season.
Q: Coach Barnett, congratulations on your new role. What does it mean to you to be head coach of the Butler County Boys Basketball program?
"Being the head coach here at Butler County means the world to me—it’s something I’ve wanted for a long time. This community has always had my back, and that means the
world to me."
Q: What can fans expect from a team coached by you?
"With a team coached by me, you can expect three things: Hustle, Perseverance, and Togetherness. That’s our team motto this year, and it’s something we’ve all already bought into. We may not win every game, but our teams will never give up and will always battle until the final whistle. Guaranteed."
Q: What’s your coaching background prior to taking this position?
"Before taking this position, I coached at Butler County Middle School (BCMS) for 12 years—seven as head coach and five as an assistant under Coach Cody Donaldson. During
that time, we brought home the first GRVC Championship since Coach Dockery’s tenure at BCMS. We went on to win three straight GRVC titles, achieving a three-peat with the
same group through their 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade seasons. We also had two runner-up finishes. In addition, I’ve assisted Coach Dockery at the high school level for the past several years once our middle school season wrapped up."
Q: What’s your vision for the program in year one and beyond?
"My vision is to be competitive every single year in the 3rd Region, not just within our district. Ultimately, I want to lead Butler County back to Rupp Arena as soon as possible.
That will be our goal every single season. Once district tournament arrives, anything can happen—and I’ll make sure our guys believe that."
Q: How do you feel the 12th District looks for this season?
"The 12th District is very tough this year. Everyone knows about Grayson County—with players like Jack Logsdon, Jagger Mardis, and Brody Armstrong—and rightfully so.
They’re a very talented team. But Edmonson County deserves more respect than they’re getting, and I know firsthand how competitive they are. We’ve had some great middle school battles with those guys. Trinity is always tough, well-coached, and never gives up. There’s going to be a lot of good basketball played in the 12th this season."
Q: How do you feel Region 3 looks overall, and who appears to be the preseason favorite?
"Region 3 is absolutely stacked this year. Daviess County, Grayson County, and Ohio
County have all added transfers that strengthen already talented rosters. I saw
Muhlenberg County this summer—they’re legit. Meade County has a strong program and
a player drawing Division I attention. If I had to pick a favorite, I’d say Daviess County,
with Grayson County a close second. Daviess returns their two main guys—and to be the
best, you have to beat the best."
Q: Who are your assistant coaches and support staff this season, and what are their roles?
"My coaching staff includes:
- Adam Stovall – JV Head Coach; oversees strength & conditioning.
- Jagger Henderson – Assistant Coach; focuses on stats, strategies, and game planning.
- Caleb Ray – Assistant Coach; handles scouting, game plans, and technology.
- Isaac Dockery – Assists when available; also coaches our middle school program.
It’s a great staff with strong experience and chemistry."
Q: How important are your preseason scrimmages in preparing the team, and what’s the
schedule?
"Our scrimmages are extremely important—they help us gauge where we stand and identify
our strengths and weaknesses early. We’ll travel to Fairdale on November 15 to face
Paducah Tilghman, a preseason top 25 team. JV tips off at 6:50 p.m., varsity follows at 7:50
p.m. (Eastern Time). Then we’ll head to Metcalfe County on November 28 for Freshman,
JV, and Varsity scrimmages. We’re still waiting on game times from their coach."
Q: What message do you have for the players and the community?
"My message to the players is simple: I’m here to make you the best young men you can be,
on and off the court. I’ll be the first to correct them when they mess up—but also the first
to praise them when they get it right. To the community: Thank you for your constant
support. We will represent Butler County with integrity, honor, and grit—always."
