Bears Baseball fall to Henderson and Franklin-Simpson in Week 1

Steven White

After the first week of action, the BCHS Baseball saw tough competition in two games, and had two dates canceled due to the heavy rains that came in over the weekend.

The Bears dropped the first two games of the 2012 season to quality opponents. On Saturday March 10, the Bears suffered a defeat on their season opening game to the number 17 ranked (KHSAA Coaches Poll) Henderson County Colonels in 26-2 loss.

Coach Winn stated, “Henderson is a tough opener.  I want our guys to see good competition. That is the only way this team is going to improve and it will only make us better for when we face district opponents.”

Despite a great pitching performance by senior lefty Steven White on Tuesday, the Bears also fell to Franklin Simpson 12-2.  White went 3 2/3 innings only giving up 1 earned run, while striking out 6.  According to Coach Winn, even though the team did improve after the Saturday match, he still sees a lot of room to grow.

“Each day is a learning process," said Winn, "We need to play better defense as a team and maintain focus for a full seven innings of baseball.”

Errors have proven to be costly in the first two contests of the season.  The Bears have allowed 12 unearned runs over two games.

Due to heavy rain, the Bears were unable to play a Thursday match-up at Ohio County, and a home varsity doubleheader against Hart County on Friday.  The Ohio County game will be made up on May 5th (senior day) at the Butler County Baseball Complex.  A second varsity game will be added in place of the already scheduled JV contest.  The Hart County doubleheader has currently not been rescheduled due to scheduling conflicts.

Looking ahead to this week:
The Bears will play four games over the next six days and look to have a big week.  Tuesday’s matchup will be a home Varsity/JV doubleheader against rival Russellville High School starting at 5:00 PM.  Over the weekend, BCHS will travel to South Warren High School to play in the South Lead Off Classic tournament.  The Bears will face good competition playing South Warren, Allen County, and Hancock County.
