Bears and Lady Bears pull district win against Grayson County

Lady Bears pull away to beat Grayson County, 54-38

MORGANTOWN — Butler County pulled away to beat visiting Grayson County 54-38 in a 12th District girls' basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 5. 

The Lady Bears, who finished the regular season first in the 12th District, returned to the win column after dropping a game to Franklin-Simpson four days earlier.

After claiming the win, Butler County improved to 19-2 overall and 5-0 in the 12th District.

Grayson County stumbled to 2-15 overall and 0-5 in the 12th District following the loss. 

Butler County and Grayson County were tied 9-9 at the conclusion of the first quarter. But Butler County moved ahead, outscoring Grayson County 9-5 in the second period to lead 18-14 at halftime. 

The Lady Bears, under the direction of head coach Lexie Belcher, led 38-31 at the end of the third quarter. 

Taylor Leach scored 14 points to lead Butler County to the district win. Accompanying Leach in double figures for the Lady Bears, Taylin Clark scored 11 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for Butler County, Jaelyn Taylor and Gracie Cardwell netted nine points apiece.

Rounding out Butler County's individual scoring, Jenna Phelps and Graci Leach chipped in seven points and four points, respectively. 

Butler County is scheduled to host South Warren for a non-district matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 8. 


Bears push past Grayson County, 53-48

MORGANTOWN — Butler County pushed past visiting Grayson County 53-48 in a 12th District boys' basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 5.

The Bears returned to the win column after suffering a loss to Franklin-Simpson four days earlier. 

With the win, Butler County improved to 14-7 overall and 3-2 in the 12th District. 

Grayson County dropped to 10-11 overall and 2-2 in the 12th District after absorbing the loss. 

The Bears overcame a slow start to claim the district win. Starting strong, Grayson County outscored Butler County 19-9 in the first quarter. Remaining out in front, Grayson County led 29-25 at halftime but faltered after the break. 

Butler County battled back to lead 37-35 at the end of the third quarter. 

The Bears outscored Grayson County 16-13 in the fourth quarter to claim the district win.

Butler County featured three scorers in double figures. 

Solomon Flener scored 18 points to lead Butler County to the victory. Accompanying Flener in double figures for the Bears, Jagger Henderson scored 11 points and Lawson Rice netted 10 points.

Aiding Butler County offensively, Brody Hunt (eight points), Zack Phelps (four points) and Braden Dockery (two points) provided the rest of the Bears' scoring. 

The Bears are scheduled to host Christian County for a non-district matchup on Monday, Feb. 7.
