Bears and Lady Bears end regular season with win

Bears notch win over Patriots in regular season finale

MORGANTOWN — Returning to the win column, Butler County beat Allen County-Scottsville 79-72 in a boys' high school basketball regular season finale on Friday, Feb. 21.

Butler County improved to 16-13 after notching the win.

Allen County-Scottsville excelled early, outscoring Butler County 17-11 in the opening quarter. 

But Butler County shook off a slow start to lead 41-38 at halftime. 

The Calvin Dockery-coached Bears were ahead 58-57 at the conclusion of the third period.

Ty Price led Butler County to the win. Price, who has been named the 3rd Region Boys' Basketball Player of the Year, poured in a game-high 37 points for the Bears.

Accompanying Price in double figures for Butler County, Trever Deweese scored 13 points and Justin Castlen netted 10 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for Butler County, Briar Griffin posted nine points.

Rounding out Butler County's scoring, Case Hooten added six points and Curtis Murphy contributed four points. 

Butler County is scheduled to meet Edmonson County in the semifinals of the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Whitesville Trinity is hosting the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament. 

 

Lady Bears hold off Hart County 

 

MUNFORDVILLE — Determined Butler County held on to defeat Hart County 59-55 in a girls' high school basketball regular season finale on Friday. Feb. 21.

After notching the win, Butler County improved to 11-14. 

Butler County and Hart County exchanged leads throughout the game. However, Butler County finished strong to register the win. 

The Lady Bears benefitted from a balanced offensive attack.

Ava Wilson paced Butler County, scoring 13 points for the Lady Bears.

Accompanying Wilson in double figures for Butler County, Carley Cardwell scored 11 points and Bailey Moore netted 10 points.

Eight players entered Butler County's scoring column. The additional scorers for Butler County were Ann Marie Skaggs (seven points), Tinslea Belcher (six points), Isabella Easley (five points), Karrington Hunt (five points) and Jenna Tomes (two points). 

Butler County is scheduled to meet Grayson County in the semifinals of the 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24. Whitesville Trinity is hosting the 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament.
