Bears and Lady Bears defeat Edmonson County Wildcats

Clark lifts Lady Bears over Edmonson County, 44-42 

BROWNSVILLE — Taylin Clark hit the game-winning shot to lift Butler County over Edmonson County 44-42 in a 12th District girls' basketball game on Friday, Feb. 11.

After notching the win, Butler County improved to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the 12th District. 

Clark scored the 1,000th point of her career during the district matchup. 

Combining to pace Butler County, Clark and Jaelyn Taylor scored 10 points apiece. 

Moving ahead early, Butler County outscored Edmonson County 12-9 in the opening quarter. The Lady Bears led 21-17 at halftime of the matchup but Edmonson County continued to push for the win.

Overcoming its four-point halftime deficit, Edmonson County battled back to-tie the game 31-31 prior to the conclusion of the third quarter.

Determined Butler County outscored Edmonson County 13-11 in the fourth quarter to claim the district win. 

Narrowly missing double figures in scoring for the Lady Bears, Graci Leach netted nine points.

Rounding out Butler County's individual scoring, Gracie Cardwell and Jenna Phelps chipped in eight points and seven points, respectively. 

Defensively, Butler County limited Edmonson County during the district matchup.

Edmonson County (9-16 overall, 2-3 12th District) shot 40.9 percent (18-of-44) from the field. but missed all eight of its three-point field goal attempts.

The Lady Cats shot 46.2 percent (six-of-13) from the free throw line. 

Annie Kiper and Paige Wolfe scored 10 points apiece to lead Edmonson County.

The additional scorers for Edmonson County in the district game were Cariann Williams (eight points), Lily Jane Vincent (eight points), Hallie Cassady (four points) and Leah Ballance (two points). 

Both Butler County and Edmonson County will compete in the 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament in less than two weeks. 

 

Bears upend Wildcats, 69-63

BROWNSVILLE — Butler County upended Edmonson County 69-63 in a 12th District boys' basketball game on Friday, Feb. 11.

Following the win, Butler County improved to 15-9 overall and 4-2 in the 12th District. 

Edmonson County dropped to 13-11 overall and 2-3 in the 12th District after suffering the loss. 

Moving ahead early, Edmonson County outscored the Bears 16-13 in the first quarter. Edmonson County led 33-29 at halftime but the Bears managed to pull even prior to the start of the final period.

Longtime rivals, Butler County and Edmonson County were tied 53-53 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

The Bears outscored the Wildcats 16-10 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win. 

Butler County received scoring from six different players, five of whom reached double figures. 

Lawson Rice scored 15 points to lead Butler County to the district win. Along with Rice reaching double figures, Solomon Flener scored 14 points, Braden Dockery netted 13 points and Brody Hunt and Jagger Henderson tossed in 11 points apiece.

Rounding out Butler County's individual scoring, Isaac Dockery chipped in five points. 

Edmonson County lost despite shooting 55.3 percent (26-of-47) from the field. The Wildcats shot 37.5 percent (nine-of-24) from three-point range.

Trace Taylor led Edmonson County, scoring a game-high 16 points for the Wildcats. Accompanying Taylor in double figures for Edmonson County, Braden Wall, Braxton Highbaugh and Evan Stice netted 12 points apiece. 

The additional scorers for Edmonson County in the district matchup included Tyler Anderson (six points), Cole Saling (three points) and Zander Bass (two points). 

Both Butler County and Edmonson County will compete in the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament in less than two weeks.
