Bears, Aces set to spar in district opener

Butler County will face Owenboro Catholic (above) in football action on Friday night.

It will be blue versus green on Friday night as the Butler County Bears' football team travels north up the Natcher to face perennial football power Owensboro Catholic on Friday night.  Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. at Steele Stadium (Bullitt Wilson Field) on the campus of Kentucky Wesleyan University.  This week five match-up is the first district game for both teams (Class 2A, District 2).  The Bears are 3-1 on the season and are coming off a well-deserved 14-0 win last week against Grayson.  Meanwhile, the Aces are 2-2, having dropped its last two contests - a 43-0 loss to Owensboro and a 48-34 loss to South Spencer (Indiana).
B.C.H.S. Coach Ryan Emmick always expects a tough opponent in Owensboro Catholic.
"Owensboro Catholic is a great team.  They typically, year-in and year-out, are one of the top teams in our region.  We are going to go in and play solid, fundamental football for four quarters," said Emmick.  "We have to be sound in our pass responsibilities and understand what their formation tendencies are.  Offensively, we have to pass block well and ensure we are giving our quarterbacks time," added Emmick.
Coach Emmick understands the significance of the getting off to a good start to district play.
"The first district game sets you up for the remainder of the year.  We have a goal of winning a district championship and to do it, it has to go through Owensboro Catholic," said Emmick.  "It is just another step along the way to accomplishing what we set out to do at the beginning of the season.  We have to take it one game at a time and make sure we get off the bus ready to go."
Friday night's game will be aired live on WLBQ 1570 AM and streamed live on www.beechtreenews.com.  BtN/WLBQ veteran sportscaster Mark Allen will call play-by-play action.
