Bd of Education Travels to Green River YDC

GRS Principal Ben Annis

The Butler County Board of Education held their monthly meeting Tuesday night at Green River Youth Development Center.  Board member Karen Evans was absent due to receiving an award that night from Kentucky Farm Bureau.  New Principal Ben Annis, who replaced Principal Jim Bob Green, gave a presentation on the school and the goals and methods used to reach the students there.

Superintendent Scott Howard led a discussion on the Literacy Initiative within the school district.  BCMS Principal Robert Tuck described the effort by saying “We knew if we could move reading, we could move other areas.”  BCHS Principal Patrick O’Driscoll said the high school made literacy an issue to pick up the efforts with students at BCMS.  Curriculum Coordinator Vonda Jennings showed a recording of interviews she did with sophomores on what they were learning through the initiative.

Howard said the Board just missed out on a grant from the Drug Free Coalition on a school resource officer, but the grant proposal was being rewritten.  Howard said he attended the Boys and Girls Club Directors meeting and told the Board his goal was to have a Boys and Girls Club chapter at North Butler Elementary School.

Treasurer Eric Elms reported that the beginning balance for August was $1,492,099.17 and the ending balance was $1,679,116.79; Elms stated that the ending balance was about $300,000 better than August of last year.

The Board approved FY 15 fund raisers for Morgantown Elementary, North Butler Elementary, and Butler County Middle schools; an FMLA request for a teacher at BCMS; FY 15 Fund 2 Budgets and FY 15 SBDM carryover monies; a trip request for the BCHS boys golf team to attend the regional tournament in Owensboro on September 29-30; and a trip request for the BCMS softball team to attend the state tournament at Christian County on October 3-4.
