BCMS Jr. Beta Collects 550 Pounds of Caps for Bench

Wanda Nevins collected 10 pounds of tops for her friend Evan Johnson.

The Butler County Middle School’s Junior Beta Club has collected over 550 pounds of plastic tops and will be getting their first recycled bench soon. Wanda Nevins, of Morgantown, has been saving plastic tops to help her friend, Evan Johnson. She surprised Evan at school on Monday and brought in ten pounds of tops.

Butler County Middle School is partnering with Green Tree Plastics in Evansville, Indiana.  The Junior Beta Club is sponsoring this partnership called “A Bench for Caps.” They are collecting any plastic caps that are clean and free of metal. Besides bottle caps, this includes:

•        snap-on cottage cheese, coffee can, and yogurt lids
•        twist-on medicine, drink, and milk bottles tops/caps, including the ring
•        flip-top ketchup and condiment bottles
•        large twist (such as detergent)
•        spout (such as squirt mustard)

Beech Tree News/WLBQ 1570 teamed with BCMS in this project and donated the $200 to the Jr. Beta Club to purchase the recycled bench.

"We are excited about the project and knew the students and staff would collect the tops they need. We are proud to help in their efforts" said John Embry, co-owner of Beech Tree News.

“With the tops and the money, our school will receive a six-foot bench made out of the recycled plastic,” said Paige McKinney, Junior Beta Sponsor.

The Junior Beta Club is also collecting can tabs.  The tabs will be recycled, and the money will be given to the Ronald McDonald House.  They welcome all students, parents, and community members to help us collect these items.  If you have any questions, please contact Paige McKinney, Junior Beta Sponsor, at [email protected].
