BCMS honors 8th graders at annual awards night

Family members, friends, and well wishers gathered at the Butler County Middle School gymnasium tonight as approximately 150 eighth grade students were recognized at the school's 2011-12 graduation and awards night ceremony.  

BCMS Principal Jeff Jennings welcomed those in attendance and spoke to students about this important time in their life and the possibilities and challenges they face in the future.  Jennings also spoke about the loss earlier this year of 8th grader Zakry Adkins.  Zak's sister, Nikki, was present to receive the Principal's Award and his Certificate of Promotion. 

Butler County Schools' Superintendent Scott Howard and BCMS Assistant Principal Robert Tuck were also present to assist in the ceremony. 

8th grade teachers presented a variety of academic awards recognizing student achievement in their respective subject areas - Social Studies (U.S. History), Language Arts, Math, and Science.  8th grade teachers are Kaylee Taylor, James Martin, Holly Elmore, Amy Smith-Thomas, Ronnie Tyree, Leslie Shultz, Scott Flener, and John Embry.

Mr. Flener noted that for the first time ever, middle school students were able to earn high school algebra credit.   

Mr. Tyree, 8th grade team leader, presented several students with citizenship awards, while Mrs. Shultz recognized top Accelerated Reader students and STLP accomplishments.

Retiring BCMS Band Director Boyce Flener presented a band award.

Mr. Jennings also recognized several students for cumulative academic averages, as well as for perfect attendance.

Three Years All "A" Cumulative Averages:  Isaiah Arnold, Naomi Cade, Sabrina Camus, Drew Clark, Abby Coomes, Annabelle Cooper, Jarred Corona, Kimberlea Ferrell, Taylor King, Emma Robbins, Deserae Stivers, Emily Wallace, Madison Wells, and Kaitlyn Wilson. 

Three Years Perfect Attendance:  Dylan Inglis, Ty Lawrence, and Heather Martin.

Two Years Perfect Attendance:  Ivy Beatty, Jay McPherson, and Rheanne Mills.

One Year Perfect Attendance:  Noah Bailey, Dakota Decker, Hannah Peach, Amber Ryan, Riley Slaughter, and Kelsie Wilson. 

Finally, Mr. Jennings, Mr. Tuck, and Mr. Boyce Flener called the class roll and presented each student with their 8th grade Certificate of Promotion.  The crowd gave each row a round of applause as they were announced.
