BCMS Football Finishes Regular Season

Butler County Middle School finished its regular season with a home game on September 12th against Grayson County and an away game on September 18th at Breckenridge County.  September 12th was not only the Bears final home game of the season, but it was also 8th Grade Night.  The 7th grade team played first against the Cougars of Grayson County. They finished the game with a score of 22-12. After 8th grade recognition, which was between games, the 8th grade team came out ready to show the Cougars whose field they were on.  The Bears struck first with a consistent drive down the field which ended in a 20 yard completion from Jagger Henderson to Alex Elmore.  They won easily with a score of 42-8.

On Thursday night, September 19th, the Bears took the field for their last regular season game.  Both Breckenridge’s and Butler’s 8th teams were undefeated in conference play up until this point so this game would determine which school gets to host the GRVC tournament.  The 7th grade teams took the field first though in what proved to be the Bears’ best offensive outing of the season.  The Bears’ 7th grade team took charge of the game early.   Consistent drives from the Bear’s offense resulted in several scores.  The Bears defense was also solid holding the Tigers scoreless, and Mathew Jones returned a forced fumble for a touchdown. They went on to win with a score of 26-6.  The 8th grade team took the field next for what turned out to be a battle from start to finish.  The Bears were without the help of key player Solomon Flener, however, who was injured in last week’s game.  The game was very physical, but the Bears held their own, leading most of the game at 14-12.  It wasn’t until the 4th quarter with 1:38 left on the clock that the Cougars scored and took the lead at 20-12.  The Bears were far from being finished though, because Alex Elmore ran the kick off back for a touchdown and Brody Hunt caught the pass from Jagger Henderson for the two point conversion to regain the lead for the Bears at 22-20.  Brody Hunt recovered the Bears onside kick to give the Bears possession.  After 4 long downs, the Bears attempted to punt the ball away, but a botched snap was picked up by the Cougars and ran in for a touchdown.  The Bears lost a tough one with a score of 28-22.

The Green River Valley Conference Championship was played at Breckinridge County.  After falling behind the Tigers the Bears came back but fell 30-34 to Breck Co. in the final game, thus claiming the runner-up trophy.  The Bears will be playing in the first round of the Kentucky Middle School State Tournament on October 14th.  De to field conditions the game may or may not be played at Butler County.
