BCMS 7th grade remains undefeated with win over McLean; 8th grade falls short

The BCMS Bears were on the road Tuesday, August 23rd against the Hancock County Middle School Cougars. 7th grade kicked off first with the Cougars receiving the ball. The Cougars were able to move the ball to mid-field, but the Bears forced a fumble.  Alex Jefferies recovered, giving the Bears' offense good field position.

The Bears were able to get into scoring position after a run by Alex Mahaney, but the Cougar defense forced and recovered a fumble, ending the Bears' drive at the 25-yard line. On Defense, the Bears’ forced and recovered a fumble of their own, giving the offense the ball at the Cougar 45-yard line. 

On 3rd and long, QB Zack Roberts found Solomon Flener across the middle for a 64-yard Touchdown pass.  The two-point conversion was successful, making the score 8-0 Bears. Butler County continued to play solid on defense and forced the Cougars to turn it over on downs.

Once on offense the Bears added to their lead. This time Alex Elmore erupted up the middle for a 70-yard touchdown run.  The two-point conversion pass to Keegan Grubb made the score 16-0 Bears. The Bears tacked on another score after Roberts hit Flener for a 51-yard touchdown pass.  The two-point conversion was successful, making the final 24-0 Bears. The 7th grade team is now 4-0 on the season.

The 8th grade game started with the Bears receiving the opening kick-off. A return set the Bears up at the 45-yard line, but a botched handoff on offense turned the ball over to the Cougars. Three plays later the Hancock QB made a nice run to score from 15 yards out. The Bears’ defense stopped the two-point conversion, making the score 6-0 Cougars.

The Bears were able to gain some momentum on the next offensive possession. A pair of completions by Jacob Cox to Flener and Laughing moved the ball into Cougar territory. However, the Cougars were able to intercept a screen pass and ended the Bears drive.

After the interception gave the Cougars a short field, they were able to capitalize and score. The Bears’ secondary broke up the two-point conversion pass, making the score 12-0 at the half.

The Cougars received the second half kickoff and drove deep into Bears' territory, but on second-and-goal Trentin Embry busted through the Cougars line, forcing and recovering a fumble giving the ball back to the Bears’ offense. Neither team was able to put any more points on the board heading into the 4th quarter.

The Bears’ offense put together a nice drive late in the game. A scramble by Zac Roberts and a pair of completions to Flener got the ball all the way down inside the Cougar 5-yard line. Alex Elmore punched it in from three yards out, giving the Bears their first score of the game. The final score was 22-6 Cougars.
