BCHS Volleyball Opens Season 4-0

This week the Lady Bears Volleyball team hit the road traveling to play Frederick Fraize on Tuesday and then Todd County on Thursday.  Tuesday was the JV’s first game of the year and although the girls played hard they were defeated by Frederick Fraize in three sets: 16-21, 21-17, and 15-21.  Inconsistent play was the downfall of the young lady bears.  There were glimpses of some really good play, but needed to serve and communicate better according to Coach Flener.

The varsity got started off right winning the first set 25-14, then lost the second set 23-25, and took the third set 25-18 to win the match.  Similar to the JV squad, the varsity girls were also inconsistent.  Sluggish passing seemed to be what hurt the girls the most.  Coach Minton said the girls have worked hard and have improved, but did not play to their potential Tuesday.

Thursday night the JV team picked up their first win of the season defeating Todd County in straight sets by scores of 21-5 and 21-16.  The first set was dominated by the young Lady Bears behind strong serving.  Autumn Gidcumb, a freshman, served thirteen straight, several of which were ‘aces’.  The second set was a little closer, but the girls shut the door on any hopes that Todd County had of winning the match.

The varsity team followed with a better performance than they had Tuesday, winning in three straight sets: 25-15, 25-18, and 25-17. The Lady Bears are currently undefeated with a 4-0 record.  Coach Minton was pleased with the performance Thursday, but wants the girls to continue to work on “the little things” to tighten up their game.   Next week the girls travel to Caverna on Tuesday for JV/V games and then on Thursday host Whitesville Trinity freshman/JV/V matches.
