BCHS Volleyball 6-2

Butler County Lady Bears Volleyball played two district games this week, Tuesday vs Grayson and Thursday vs Edmonson County. On Tuesday the freshmen team picked up their first win of the season in just their second game.  The young Lady Bears fought hard in the first set but lost 17-21.  Set two was even closer with the girls pulling out a dramatic victory by a score of 22-20.  The last set was a little easier for the Lady Bears as they cursed to a 21-13 win over the Lady Cougars.  Many schools that the lady’s play do not have a freshman team. With only four more freshman games to play it was good to pick up a win.

Up next was the junior varsity game.  The Lady Cougars proved to be more that Butler could handle on Tuesday night, winning in straight sets 21-18 and 21-13.  With the loss, the JV team drops to 2-3 on the year.  The Lady Bears have 29 players on this year’s teams, with 24 being eligible for junior varsity play.  This makes it very difficult to get playing time for all athletes, but the coaches are doing their best to get everyone some experience.

The varsity team came out flat against Grayson, falling behind early and never got on track in the first set, losing 25-13.  In the second set the Lady Bears showed some life and had the lead late, but were ultimately defeated 25-23.  It was not Butler’s night, as they were beaten in the final set by a score of 25-10.  2018 season has seen the Lady Bears play much better than they did Tuesday. Coaches are hoping this was just an “off” night and that the girls will work hard and continue to improve on what has been an exciting season thus far.

Edmonson County Lady Wildcats visited the Lady Bears Thursday day night for a JV/Varsity match up.  The JV team got started off right winning the first set 21-17.  The second and third sets saw Butler fall behind quickly, but continued to fight and make comebacks that came up a little short losing 21-17 and 21-18.

The varsity team got back to their winning ways, taking down Edmonson in three straight set: 25-18, 25-23, and 25-21.  Freshman, Autumn Gidcumb, lead the way with strong-consistent serves. Coach Minton was happy with the team’s communication and improved play.  With the victory Butler improved their record to 6-2, which is a school record for team wins in a season.  With a little more than half the season left, the girls hope to improve on their record setting season.  Next week the Lady Bears host Barren County on Tuesday and travel to Grayson County on Thursday.
