BCHS Volleyball

Last week the Lady Bears continued to make strides in the record-breaking season with both the varsity and junior varsity teams picking up two victories.  On Monday night the Lady Bears hosted Franklin Simpson in a F/JV/V matchup.  The freshman team played hard and showed a great deal of improvement but fell in straight sets.  The first set was extremely close 20-22 and the second was 12-21.  The JV team took out Franklin in straight sets 21-19 and 21-15. Everyone helped contribute to a great team victory according to coach Flener.  The varsity team got off to a slow start, having trouble handling strong serves by Franklin’s middle blocker, but rallied to take the first set 25-21.  In the second set Butler did a much better job passing the ball and won easily 25-15.

On Thursday night the Lady Bears traveled to Brownsville for a rematch with district opponent Edmonson County.  The junior varsity team dropped the first set, but won the next two.  With the victory the JV team is now 5-2, the best record for any JV in school history.  The varsity team dropped the first two sets 15-25 and 17-25. Thankfully district game are the best 3 out of 5.  The Lady Bears played much better in the third set winning 25-21.  The fourth set had the fans for both teams on the edge of their seats.  Edmonson took control early and seemed to be on their way to defeating Butler, but with the score 17-23 in favor of Edmonson, the Lady bears fought hard and battled back to take the lead 24-23.  Megan Blunk lead the surge with some pressure serve before the Lady Cats could finally break her.  With the score tied at 24-24 Edmonson could not capitalize and Butler took advantage and won on an “ace” from Autumn Gidcumb winning the set 26-24. The fifth and final set was back and forth the whole way.  Butler jumped out to an early lead 5-2 just to see Edmonson come back and go ahead 10-8. The Lady Bears tied it up at 10-10 and the teams traded points until Butler put a couple of plays together to win 15-13.  This victory give the team a 10-4 record, 2-1 in district play.
