BCHS students place in KHSJA State Broadcasting Awards

Emily Rich and Kelsey Jenkins

Students in the Butler County High School broadcast journalism class recently competed in the State Broadcasting Awards sponsored by the Kentucky High School Journalism Association. Students from 36 schools competed by class in broadcast journalism, newspaper, and yearbook; Butler County competed against other schools in the Class A division. Butler County placed first in Newscast and third in General Excellence in the Broadcast category. Madison Embry received a Certificate of Merit in Videography, Emily Rich and Kelsey Jenkins placed second in Sports Package Feature, and Trevor Jenkins' music video placed first in Humorous Feature.

BCHS Technology teacher Barry Carson said, "I'm really proud of these guys; they did a great job." Carson added that he had submitted 10 different projects to the KHSJA for this competition.

Kelsey Jenkins and Emily Rich said that they spent months working on their sports feature about members of the football team. "It was a very difficult process, but I am proud of the finished product," said Kelsey Jenkins. Her partner Rich added, "It took a lot of patience from myself and Kelsey to complete the project."

To be eligible to compete in the KHSJA State Broadcasting Awards, schools must be a member of the KHSJA.

"We wouldn't have been able to compete in this competition without the sponsorship of Beech Tree News," said Carson.

John Embry, vice-president and co-founder of Beech Tree Media, said, "We're happy to partner with Butler County High School to promote journalism in our community. Mr. Carson and his students do an outstanding job year in and year out."
