BCHS Football: Bears fall to Webster County

MORGANTOWN — Butler County suffered its first setback in the 2023 high school football season as Webster County pulled away to win 54-28 on Friday, Aug. 25. 
Following the loss, Butler County slipped to 1-1.
Webster County evened its record to 1-1 with the win. 
The game served as a home opener for the Bears. 
 
 
Visiting Webster County scored first and never trailed. The Bears couldn't battle back from behind. Starting strong, Webster County outscored the Bears 20-6 in the first quarter. 
Butler County continued to face a 14-point deficit midway through the matchup. Showing much improvement, Webster County led 28-14 at halftime. 
Extending its lead after the intermission period, Webster County led 34-16 at the conclusion of the third quarter. 
 
Garrett Phelps led the Bears, completing 20 of 25 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns.
Gage Beasley emerged as Butler County's top receiver, hauling in five receptions for 123 yards and one touchdown.
Following Beasley in Butler County's passing attack, Trevor Joiner reeled in six receptions for 64 yards. 
Another Butler County receiver, Dillon Hudnall, added a three-yard receiving touchdown.
The Bears rushed 28 times for 59 yards and one touchdown. Joiner paced Butler County on the ground, rushing eight times for 26 yards and one TD.
Phelps paced Butler County's defensive unit, registering nine tackles for the Bears. 
 
Turnovers hindered Butler County's offensive progress during the game. 
Webster County used a strong defensive performance to claim the win. The Trojans recorded four interceptions. 
Butler County is scheduled to visit Warren Central for its next game on Friday, Sept. 1.
