BCHS Football: Bears drop season opener

RUSSELLVILLE — Butler County faltered in the second half as Logan County pulled away to win 44-13 in a high school football season opener on Friday, Aug. 23. 

The Bears and Cougars were tied 7-7 at the conclusion of the opening quarter.

Butler County and Logan County entered halftime tied 13-13 but the Cougars managed to pull away.

Logan County led 27-13 at the end of the third quarter. 

Finishing strong, Logan County thrived offensively and defensively throughout the final period. 

Quarterback Garrett Phelps led Butler County, completing 16 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Leading Butler County through the air and on the ground, Phelps rushed 10 times for 92 yards. 

Lonnie Phelps and Tucker DeJarnette each hauled in one touchdown pass reception for the Bears. 

Clayton Deweese reeled in three receptions for 55 yards to rank as Butler County's leading receiver. 

Butler County rushed 21 times for 132 yards. 

Defensively, Kevin Robins posted 11 tackles for the Bears. 

Following Robins, Lonnie Phelps and Clay Steff recorded eight tackles apiece for visiting Butler County. 

The Bears have regular season games remaining versus Webster County, Warren Central, Grayson County, Hart County, Franklin-Simpson, Bethlehem, Adair County, Glasgow and Ohio County. 

Butler County (0-1) is scheduled to visit Webster County (0-1) for its next game on Friday, Aug. 30.
