BCHS Baseball: Defeats Metcalfe, Falls to Franklin

After a weekend full of baseball over spring break, the BCHS Bears returned to play another busy week of competition.  On Monday night, BCHS traveled to Franklin Simpson to face the Wildcats where they dropped an 11-1 loss.  On Tuesday, looking for redemption, BCHS made the trip to Metcalfe County where the Bears proved victorious with a solid victory of 7-3 over the Hornets.

Monday night was a tough one for BCHS.  Senior Eljiah Flener started pitching, making only his second start on the mound this season.  Flener lasted just 1 inning after walking 5 Franklin hitters and allowing 4 runners to cross the plate.  8th grader Ty Burden came in to relieve Flener in the second inning and would stay in the game pitching for the next three innings.  After 4 innings of play, Burden came out of the game due to arm trouble.  Burden was solid in his performance only allowing 2 earned runs to score while striking out three.  The Bears tried to make a push at the Cats when Elijah Flener scored Carrington Harpe after he hit a double to left field.  1 Run was all BCHS was able to push across the plate, despite doubles from Blake Graham and Harpe.  Brandon Jones came in to finish the game pitching for the Bears, making his second appearance for the year.  Jones could not keep the Cat’s offense quiet and Franklin ended up winning the game early in 6 innings due to the mercy rule.

On Tuesday BCHS looked to reenergize after tough loss and put out their best effort against Metcalfe County.  The Bears were able to do just that. BCHS threw 4 pitchers in the contest with the win going to the starting pitcher, Keston Flener.  Flener did well on the mound, striking out 4 Hornet hitters.  Flener was then relieved by Caleb Hunt, Hunter Wilson, and Blake Graham, who all threw an inning a piece.  The Bears scored 7 runs off of 4 singles and 8 walks.  Graham, Eddie Phelps, and Clark Parker each record an RBI of their timely singles. Senior Carrington Harpe continued to stay hot at the plate hitting his 5th double of the season.  Harpe’s .375 batting average leads the team this season.  BCHS coach Kevin Winn was happy with the rebound performance on the road: “I really liked how we competed today after a tough loss.  We threw strikes, made plays, and hit the ball well.  We did the little things right today, which I was extremely happy about.”  The Hornets and the Bears will clash again on May 10,when Metcalfe travels to Butler County.
