BC SCHOOLS: Food Drive & Shoeboxes shape learning

The NBES Fall Food Drive, held the week of November 3–7, brought together students, staff, and families in a schoolwide effort to collect and organize food items for local families in need. The project was coordinated by the NBES 5th Grade Student Advisory Team, led by AmeriCorps Student and Butler County High School senior Harlie Chapman, under the guidance of Brandie Smith, Family Resource Center Coordinator at NBES.

Together, students planned and advertised the food drive, creating colorful flyers and organizing collection points throughout the school. Each fifth-grade student participated by designing posters, spreading the word, and helping to sort donations. Their combined efforts resulted in an incredible 1,161 food items collected, a tangible display of teamwork and compassion that will make a difference for families across the community.

This month, the Butler County Middle School Fellowship of Christian Athletes (BCMS FCA) demonstrated generosity and community spirit by packing 210 Christmas shoeboxes for children around the world. Their efforts highlight Butler County Schools’ commitment to shaping learners who not only excel academically but also lead with compassion, purpose, and a sense of shared humanity.  Packing these 210 boxes reflects a collective effort that rippled far beyond the walls of the school campus.

Operation Christmas Child, a worldwide outreach project, delivers shoeboxes filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies to children in need across more than 100 countries. For many recipients, these gifts provide not only necessities but a sense of joy, hope, and connection to others around the globe.

The project brought together students, families, staff, and community partners in a shared effort to make a difference.
