BC Rocket Team competes in TARC 2012

On Saturday, May 12th, the Butler County High School Rocket Team 2 competed and placed 61st in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC 2012) at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia near Washington, D.C.  The team reached this national level after placing in the Top 100 of 674 other competing teams from across the nation after completing qualifying flights by April 2nd.

The Butler County team consisted of Tristan Elmore, Chase McCoy, Tyler Vincent, Sammy Hanson, Kang Chen, Matthew Embry, Chance Glass, and Raven Grubb and was sponsored by Mr. Robert Ayer, science teacher at BCHS.  The team placed 61st out of 101.  Ayer stated that the team’s rocket had a, “great launch and recovery.  It just went too high.”  The contest requirements are for the students to design and build a rocket that will climb to 800 feet and stay aloft for 43 to 47 seconds and use a parachute for a recovery device.

While in Washington, D.C., the team and their sponsor, as well as 10 parents, also toured the Holocaust Museum, the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian Museum of National History, and the Museum of American History.

The team thanks Butler County Board of Education for allowing us to compete and thanks the following contributing sponsors: TVA, Morgantown Freight, Dr. Todd Cohron, O.D., Green River Feed Mill Inc., and Ohio County Animal Clinic, PLLC.

Congratulations on your hard work and dedication...
Way to go! Congrats to each of you.
Congratulations folks. We never had a chance to compete against anybody. The first Morgantown Rocket Club had 5 Charter members in 1968 consisted of Charles O.Hutcheson, Jr., Bobby Wade, Malcolm Tuck, Michael D. Henderson, and David Hocker. The sponsor for the club was former Supt. Weymouth Martin. I think Mr. Martin encouraged us to keep us quiet during "study hall". He used our launches as "teachable moments" for the Math Club and Trig Class to calculate launch heights etc. Teachers like Mr. Martin have encouraged BCHS students to excel for so many years. Thank you Mr. Ayer for being a great sponsor! May you and those like you continue prosper. David Hocker
